The essentials

According to NHK, manga artist Tetsuya Chiba died on 22 October in a Tokyo hospital, aged 87, of myelodysplastic syndrome. NHK recalls that he was the author of “Ashita no Joe”, a landmark of postwar manga history, as well as of many other successes, and that he chaired the Japan Cartoonists Association.

Who was he?

According to Wikipedia, whose real name was Tetsuya Chiba, he was born in Tokyo in 1939 and spent his childhood in Mukden, Manchuria, before returning to Japan after the war. He debuted in 1956, at 17, while still a high-school student, with a manga published for rental bookshops. From 1961 he drew “Chikai no makyū” in Weekly Shōnen Magazine, broadening his work to manga for boys.

“Ashita no Joe”

“Ashita no Joe” is a boxing manga serialised in Weekly Shōnen Magazine from the issue of 1 January 1968 (on sale 15 December 1967) to that of 13 May 1973. The story is by Asao Takamori (pen name of Ikki Kajiwara) and the art by Tetsuya Chiba. According to Bungei Shunjū Online, it was the editor Teruo Miyahara who proposed a boxing work to Kajiwara. The hero is Joe Yabuki. According to Wikipedia, the series has 20 volumes from Kodansha Comics and exceeded 25 million copies in December 2010; it was also adapted as a TV animation from 1970. It ranks among the great successes of postwar manga. In a 2002 interview (Tokyo Dome), Chiba said he wanted to draw not only the winners but also those who fail. He also drew long sports series, such as “Notari Matsutarō” and “Ashita tenki ni naare”.

Honours and positions

According to Wikipedia, Chiba received the Medal with Purple Ribbon in 2002 and the Order of the Rising Sun, Gold Rays with Rosette, in 2012, then was named a Person of Cultural Merit in 2014; in 2024 he received the Kikuchi Kan Prize and the Order of Culture. He led the Japan Cartoonists Association as managing director (rijichō) from 2012 to 2018, then as chairman (kaichō) from 2018. His series “Hinemosu notari nikki”, published since 2015, had been paused in September 2026 for health reasons.

French grammar

Learn sentence patterns and usage from the article’s own sentences.

01The present indicative
Structure

est / sont + attribute (noun, adjective, prepositional phrase)

In the article
« Ashita no Joe » est un manga de boxe publié dans le Weekly Shōnen Magazine du numéro du 1er janvier 1968 (en vente le 15 décembre 1967) à celui du 13 mai 1973.
Key points

Être in the present is est for a singular subject and sont for a plural one. It describes nature, state or place (“is”, “is located”). If what follows (the attribute) is a noun, adjective or prepositional phrase, it is not a passive. If a past participle follows, it is a passive (est annoncé). Headlines and summaries often use the present to describe the current situation.

02The passé composé
Structure

present of avoir + past participle

In the article
NHK rappelle qu’il est l’auteur d’« Ashita no Joe », monument de l’histoire du manga d’après-guerre, ainsi que de nombreux autres succès, et qu’il a présidé l’Association japonaise des mangaka.
Key points

The passé composé is the most common past tense, used for “did” and “has done” — actions completed in the past. It is formed with the auxiliary avoir (a / ont…) in the present + a past participle. Past participles of -er verbs end in -é (annoncer → annoncé); learn the irregular ones (faire → fait, prendre → pris, voir → vu). In the negative, ne … pas wraps the auxiliary (n’a pas annoncé). In the news it reports facts that have already happened, such as “announced” or “voted”.

03The imparfait
Structure

stem (nous form of the present) + -ais / -ait / -ions / -iez / -aient

In the article
Il a débuté en 1956, à 17 ans, alors qu’il était encore lycéen, avec un manga publié en librairie de prêt.
Key points

The imparfait describes states, background, habits and actions in progress in the past (il était, elle avait, ils pensaient). Take the nous form of the present, drop -ons, and add -ais / -ais / -ait / -ions / -iez / -aient. If the passé composé gives “the event itself”, the imparfait paints “the situation at the time”.

04The passive in the passé composé
Structure

a / ont été + past participle

In the article
Selon Wikipédia, Chiba a reçu la médaille au ruban pourpre en 2002 et l’Ordre du Soleil levant, rayons d’or avec rosette, en 2012, puis a été nommé personne de mérite culturel en 2014 ; en 2024, il a reçu le prix Kikuchi Kan et l’Ordre de la Culture.
Key points

The past passive means “was done”. Its form is present of avoir + été (past participle of être) + past participle. Été does not change, but the last participle agrees with the subject in gender and number (la loi a été votée / les textes ont été votés). It is frequent in news reporting results such as votes, decisions and announcements.

05Citing a source with selon
Structure

selon + noun / organisation

In the article
Selon NHK, le mangaka Tetsuya Chiba est mort le 22 octobre dans un hôpital de Tokyo, à 87 ans, d’un syndrome myélodysplasique.
Key points

Selon means “according to”. Put a person or organisation after it as the source. It separates facts the writer checked directly from what another body or report said. Citing a source does not turn a forecast into an accomplished fact.

06Pouvoir: ability and possibility
Structure

peut / peuvent / pourrait + infinitive

In the article
La partie biographique provient de Wikipédia, dont le contenu peut évoluer juste après un décès.
Key points

Put a base-form verb after pouvoir. Peut means “can” or “may”; the conditional pourrait gives a more reserved possibility, “might”. It does not necessarily mean implementation is settled.

07The subject relative pronoun qui
Structure

noun + qui + verb

In the article
Selon Bungei Shunjū Online, c’est l’éditeur Teruo Miyahara qui a proposé à Kajiwara une œuvre sur la boxe.
Key points

Qui continues a description of the person or thing just mentioned (“the one that does…”). Because qui is itself the subject of the next verb, do not repeat the subject. The verb agrees with the noun qui refers to.

08Delimiting an interval
Structure

de … à … / du … au …

In the article
Il a dirigé l’Association japonaise des mangaka comme directeur général (rijichō) de 2012 à 2018, puis comme président (kaichō) à partir de 2018.
Key points

De…à… shows the start and end, “from … to …”, and is also used for changes in figures. With dates, de + le becomes du and à + le becomes au, giving forms like du 13 au 15. Check whether the interval concerns dates, times or amounts.

09Dates and their prepositions
Structure

le + 日付 / du … au …

In the article
« Ashita no Joe » est un manga de boxe publié dans le Weekly Shōnen Magazine du numéro du 1er janvier 1968 (en vente le 15 décembre 1967) à celui du 13 mai 1973.
Key points

Le 15 octobre means “on 15 October”. Distinguish the le before a date from the le that marks a weekly habit like a weekday. Du is de + le and au is à + le, so decide the meaning from the verb and period expressions around them. Their role depends on the group: a range of dates, the date of a bulletin or another complement.

01Citing a source: によると
Structure

noun + によると

In the article
NHKによると、漫画家のちばてつやさんは、10月22日、東京都内の病院で、骨髄異形成症候群のため、亡くなりました。
Key points

As in “LCPによると”, it shows where the information comes from. What that source reported follows. It is used differently from “私にとって”, which gives one’s own opinion.

02Plan, outlook and policy
Structure

〜の予定 / 〜見込み / 〜方針

In the article
NHKの記事には、家族や関係者のコメント、葬儀の予定は、書かれていませんでした。
Key points

予定 is a plan, 見込み a forecast and 方針 a course of action or intention. None of them asserts that something has already been carried out. Note the difference from expressions such as “決まりました”.

03Cause or purpose with ため
Structure

〜ため / 〜ために

In the article
2015年から連載していた「ひねもすのたり日記」は、2026年9月に、体調不良のため、お休みすると発表されていました。
Key points

ため is used for both reason and purpose. “成立ではないため” is a reason and “運転手を守るため” a purpose. Decide from the whole sentence whether what precedes is a cause or a goal.

04Giving examples with など
Structure

noun / expression + など

In the article
NHKは、27日、「あしたのジョー」などで知られる漫画家のちばてつやさんが、10月22日に、東京都内の病院で亡くなったと伝えました。
Key points

“暴言など” gives “abusive language” as one example. It is not necessarily a closed list of only the things named. It also helps when reading the scope of a news story.

05The polite past ました
Structure

verb stem (連用形) + ました

In the article
ウィキペディアによると、本名は千葉徹彌さんで、1939年に東京で生まれ、子どものころは、満洲の奉天で過ごしました。
Key points

In “発表しました”, ました makes a verb polite past. The negative is “ませんでした”. Read the actual date together with the date and time in the text.

06Quoting with と: content and report
Structure

plain-form sentence + と + verbe de parole (報じる, 説明する…)

In the article
ウィキペディアによると、単行本は講談社コミックスで全20巻、2010年12月までの発行部数は、2500万部を超えたとされています。
Key points

と takes the content that is reported or explained. In “改定する方針だと報じました”, “改定する方針だ” is what the report said. Separating the content from who said it and how makes long sentences easier to read.
