The essentials
OpenAI announced on 21 October the extension of ads in ChatGPT to 26 new countries, 89 in total. Ads appear only for users of the free and Go plans.
Countries and users
The new markets include 14 Latin American countries (Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Peru…), as well as Nigeria, South Africa, Serbia, Ukraine, Cambodia, Bangladesh and Pakistan. OpenAI names only some of the 26 countries. Plus, Pro and Enterprise subscribers do not see ads.
Advertisers and revenue
According to CNBC, more than 100,000 advertisers have already run campaigns on ChatGPT, and advertising activity reached an annualised pace of $1 billion in August. Advertisers go through technology partners or self-serve via Ads Manager.
Why this extension
CNBC presents this extension as a step in the diversification of OpenAI’s revenue: the more countries, the more the company earns from non-subscribing users. The possible influence of ads on ChatGPT’s answers interests users, but the sources for this article do not settle it.
To keep in mind
The number of countries is given differently (80, 83, 89) depending on the article; OpenAI and CNBC say 89, which is used here. The influence of ads on answers is not established by this article’s sources.

01The present indicative
est / sont + attribute (noun, adjective, prepositional phrase)
Les dates d’annonce, des faits et de vérification sont distinctes.Key pointsÊtre in the present is est for a singular subject and sont for a plural one. It describes nature, state or place (“is”, “is located”). If what follows (the attribute) is a noun, adjective or prepositional phrase, it is not a passive. If a past participle follows, it is a passive (est annoncé). Headlines and summaries often use the present to describe the current situation.
02The passé composé
present of avoir + past participle
OpenAI a annoncé le 21 octobre l’extension des publicités dans ChatGPT à 26 nouveaux pays, soit 89 au total.Key pointsThe passé composé is the most common past tense, used for “did” and “has done” — actions completed in the past. It is formed with the auxiliary avoir (a / ont…) in the present + a past participle. Past participles of -er verbs end in -é (annoncer → annoncé); learn the irregular ones (faire → fait, prendre → pris, voir → vu). In the negative, ne … pas wraps the auxiliary (n’a pas annoncé). In the news it reports facts that have already happened, such as “announced” or “voted”.
03The passive voice in the present
être (est / sont) + past participle (+ par / de)
Le nombre de pays est donné différemment (80, 83, 89) selon les articles ; OpenAI et CNBC indiquent 89, retenu ici.Key pointsThe passive means “is done” or “is being done”. It is formed with être + past participle, which agrees with the subject in gender and number (la mesure est adoptée / les mesures sont adoptées). The agent is introduced by par (or de). In the news it is common when the event, rather than the actor, is the focus (est prévu / est annoncé / est connu).
04Negation and its scope
ne / n’ … pas · ne … plus
Les annonces n’apparaissent que pour les utilisateurs des formules gratuite et Go.Key pointsNormally ne and pas wrap the verb. Before a vowel, ne becomes n’. Check which part of the sentence the negation covers. Ne … plus means “no longer”.
05Citing a source with selon
selon + noun / organisation
Selon CNBC, plus de 100 000 annonceurs ont déjà diffusé des campagnes sur ChatGPT, et l’activité publicitaire a atteint un rythme de 1 milliard de dollars annualisé en août.Key pointsSelon means “according to”. Put a person or organisation after it as the source. It separates facts the writer checked directly from what another body or report said. Citing a source does not turn a forecast into an accomplished fact.
06The subject relative pronoun qui
noun + qui + verb
Annoncé par OpenAI le 21 octobre : qui voit les publicités, combien d’annonceurs et quel chiffre d’affaires.Key pointsQui continues a description of the person or thing just mentioned (“the one that does…”). Because qui is itself the subject of the next verb, do not repeat the subject. The verb agrees with the noun qui refers to.
07Dates and their prepositions
le + 日付 / du … au …
Annoncé par OpenAI le 21 octobre : qui voit les publicités, combien d’annonceurs et quel chiffre d’affaires.Key pointsLe 15 octobre means “on 15 October”. Distinguish the le before a date from the le that marks a weekly habit like a weekday. Du is de + le and au is à + le, so decide the meaning from the verb and period expressions around them. Their role depends on the group: a range of dates, the date of a bulletin or another complement.
Japanese grammar
Understand the structure and usage from the text.
01Citing a source: によると
noun + によると
CNBCによると、これまでに10万を超える広告主が、ChatGPTで広告を出しました。Key pointsAs in “LCPによると”, it shows where the information comes from. What that source reported follows. It is used differently from “私にとって”, which gives one’s own opinion.
02Giving examples with など
noun / expression + など
新しい国には、アルゼンチン、チリ、コロンビア、ペルーなど、中南米の14か国が入っています。Key points“暴言など” gives “abusive language” as one example. It is not necessarily a closed list of only the things named. It also helps when reading the scope of a news story.
03The polite past ました
verb stem (連用形) + ました
OpenAIが21日に発表しました。Key pointsIn “発表しました”, ました makes a verb polite past. The negative is “ませんでした”. Read the actual date together with the date and time in the text.
04Quoting with と: content and report
plain-form sentence + と + verbe de parole (報じる, 説明する…)
OpenAIは、21日、ChatGPTの広告を、新たに26か国に広げると発表しました。Key pointsと takes the content that is reported or explained. In “改定する方針だと報じました”, “改定する方針だ” is what the report said. Separating the content from who said it and how makes long sentences easier to read.
05Linking actions with the て-form
verb て-form + next expression
OpenAIの発表では、26か国のうち、一部の国名しか示されていません。Key pointsThe て-form links actions in a series, in order or as a reason. In “確認して、出発する” the relation is judged from the content. In “〜ている” it can show an action in progress or a continuing state.
06Linking two nouns with の
noun A + の + noun B
広告が出る対象、広告主の数、収益の規模を整理します。Key pointsA explains noun B that follows. It is not only possession: the relation can be belonging, target, content and more. In “政府の案” and “年金の税控除”, read the relation from the context.
