Overview
Saint-Émilion Grand Cru is an appellation of origin. The words “Grand Cru” alone do not mean the château is classified. 2022 classification: 85 châteaux. 14 Premiers Grands Crus Classés (including 2 in category A) and 71 Grands Crus Classés. A: Château Figeac, Château Pavie. Premier Grand Cru Classé B: the 12 châteaux commonly called B. Official documents write “Premier Grand Cru Classé” for all those not in A. · Beau-Séjour Bécot · Beauséjour Héritiers Duffau Lagarrosse · Bélair-Monange · Canon · Canon La Gaffelière · Larcis Ducasse · Pavie Macquin · Troplong Mondot · Trottevieille · Valandraud · Clos Fourtet · La Mondotte This classification began in 1955 and is revised roughly every ten years. It is separate from the 1855 Médoc classification: do not compare the two on the same scale. On a label, look for the word “Classé” and the classification of the vintage concerned.
