01

Basics

Pronunciation

Accent marks

é is a closed “ay”, è/ê an open “eh”, ç sounds like “s”. Accents can change the word: a ≠ à.

Silent final consonants

petit, vous, grand: a final t, s, d or x is usually not pronounced.

Nasal vowels

an/en, on, in/ain: the “n” is not pronounced; the air passes through the nose.

The r

A light friction at the back of the throat, like a tiny gargle — not the Japanese r.

u vs. ou

ou is like Japanese ウー; u is “ee” said with rounded lips (rue, tu).

Liaison

In “vous êtes” the final s links to the next vowel: “voo-zet”.
