a, i, u, e, o. Each vowel keeps almost the same sound every time.
“obasan” (aunt) and “obāsan” (grandmother) are different words: hold a long vowel for two beats.
It doubles the next consonant with a brief stop: “kitte” (stamp) differs from “kite” (come).
It takes a full beat and may sound like m, n or ng depending on the next sound.
Neither the English nor the French r: a quick tap of the tongue, between “l” and “d”.
No strong stress: Japanese uses pitch. Depending on the melody, “hashi” means chopsticks or bridge.
Katakana write the same sounds (あ→ア, か→カ) and are used for loanwords and foreign names. A dakuten (゛) makes が, ざ, だ, ば; a handakuten (゜) makes ぱ.
