Unauthorised access to the digital bookstore Comic Cmoa has leaked member data. What leaked, what did not, and what to do.

The essentials
NTT Solmare, which operates the digital bookstore Comic Cmoa, announced on 21 October that up to about 4.2 million lines of member data had leaked. Credit card information is not affected, and no leak or loss of purchase histories or of the “MY本棚” (My Bookshelf) library has been found.
The data concerned
From the member database, 319 lines leaked (email address, hashed password, nickname, date of birth…). System log files, up to about 4.2 million lines (email address, nickname…); the logs contain no password. Fields vary between members and one person may be counted several times.
Timeline
On the 15th, the company detected possible unauthorised access to its servers and suspended the service; on the 16th, it announced the leak of some member data; on the 21st, its fourth statement raised the figure to about 4.2 million. It says it has identified and blocked the route of intrusion. The date for resuming the service has not been set.
What to do
Affected members will be notified by email; check that it really is an official message. If you use the same password elsewhere, change it as a precaution. A disclosed email address can attract fake messages or scam attempts: do not open links without checking. These are general precautionary tips, not instructions from the company.
To keep in mind
The figure may count the same person several times: it is not a number of people. This article is based on NTT Solmare’s announcement and on ITmedia, Nikkei, Yomiuri and other media.

01The present indicative
est / sont + attribute (noun, adjective, prepositional phrase)
Ce sont des conseils généraux de prudence, pas des consignes de l’entreprise.Key pointsÊtre in the present is est for a singular subject and sont for a plural one. It describes nature, state or place (“is”, “is located”). If what follows (the attribute) is a noun, adjective or prepositional phrase, it is not a passive. If a past participle follows, it is a passive (est annoncé). Headlines and summaries often use the present to describe the current situation.
02The passé composé
present of avoir + past participle
Un accès non autorisé à la librairie numérique Comic Cmoa a fait fuiter des données de membres.Key pointsThe passé composé is the most common past tense, used for “did” and “has done” — actions completed in the past. It is formed with the auxiliary avoir (a / ont…) in the present + a past participle. Past participles of -er verbs end in -é (annoncer → annoncé); learn the irregular ones (faire → fait, prendre → pris, voir → vu). In the negative, ne … pas wraps the auxiliary (n’a pas annoncé). In the news it reports facts that have already happened, such as “announced” or “voted”.
03The imparfait
stem (nous form of the present) + -ais / -ait / -ions / -iez / -aient
NTT Solmare, qui exploite la librairie numérique Comic Cmoa, a annoncé le 21 octobre que jusqu’à environ 4,2 millions de lignes de données de membres avaient fuité.Key pointsThe imparfait describes states, background, habits and actions in progress in the past (il était, elle avait, ils pensaient). Take the nous form of the present, drop -ons, and add -ais / -ais / -ait / -ions / -iez / -aient. If the passé composé gives “the event itself”, the imparfait paints “the situation at the time”.
04The futur simple
stem (infinitive) + -ai / -as / -a / -ons / -ez / -ont
Les membres concernés seront prévenus par e-mail ; vérifiez qu’il s’agit bien d’un message officiel.Key pointsThe futur simple means “will do” or “is planned to”. Add -ai, -as, -a, -ons, -ez, -ont to the infinitive (participer → il participera). Watch the irregular stems: être → ser-, avoir → aur-, aller → ir-, faire → fer-, pouvoir → pourr-, voir → verr-. In the news it is used for fixed plans and outlooks.
05The passive voice in the present
être (est / sont) + past participle (+ par / de)
Les informations de carte bancaire ne sont pas concernées, et aucune fuite ni perte des historiques d’achat ou de la bibliothèque « MY本棚 » n’est constatée.Key pointsThe passive means “is done” or “is being done”. It is formed with être + past participle, which agrees with the subject in gender and number (la mesure est adoptée / les mesures sont adoptées). The agent is introduced by par (or de). In the news it is common when the event, rather than the actor, is the focus (est prévu / est annoncé / est connu).
06The imperative
present vous form (-ez) / nous (-ons) / tu
Les membres concernés seront prévenus par e-mail ; vérifiez qu’il s’agit bien d’un message officiel.Key pointsThe imperative expresses commands, requests and advice. It has no subject: the sentence starts with the verb (Consultez les informations.). The vous form ends in -ez, nous in -ons (Restons prudents.), and tu in -e for -er verbs (Consulte). It is very common in notices and warnings (Vérifiez, Consultez, Restez informé).
07Negation and its scope
ne / n’ … pas · ne … plus
Ce qui a fuité, ce qui n’a pas fuité et que faire.Key pointsNormally ne and pas wrap the verb. Before a vowel, ne becomes n’. Check which part of the sentence the negation covers. Ne … plus means “no longer”.
08Citing a source with selon
selon + noun / organisation
Les champs varient selon les membres et une même personne peut être comptée plusieurs fois.Key pointsSelon means “according to”. Put a person or organisation after it as the source. It separates facts the writer checked directly from what another body or report said. Citing a source does not turn a forecast into an accomplished fact.
09Pouvoir: ability and possibility
peut / peuvent / pourrait + infinitive
Une adresse e-mail divulguée peut attirer de faux messages ou des tentatives d’escroquerie : n’ouvrez pas les liens sans vérifier.Key pointsPut a base-form verb after pouvoir. Peut means “can” or “may”; the conditional pourrait gives a more reserved possibility, “might”. It does not necessarily mean implementation is settled.
10The construction il s’agit de
il s’agit de + noun / infinitive
Les membres concernés seront prévenus par e-mail ; vérifiez qu’il s’agit bien d’un message officiel.Key pointsIt explains what something is about: “it is a matter of…”. The il is not a particular man but a formal subject of this construction. The negative il ne s’agit pas de means “this is not about…”.

01Expressing a possibility
〜可能性がある / 〜かもしれない
項目は会員ごとに違い、同じ人の情報が、重複して数えられている可能性があります。Key pointsThese forms say something may happen. Even when “possibility” is written, it does not mean it will certainly happen. Check whose forecast it is, plus the time and conditions.
02Polite negation and plain form
〜ではありません / 〜ではない
これは、一般的な防犯の助言で、会社の指示ではありません。Key pointsThey negate a noun and similar content. “ではありません” is the polite form and “ではない” the plain form. “成立ではありません” shows that it cannot be said to have been concluded.
03Indicating the subject: について
noun + について
「第4報」は、事件について、4回目に出された、公式の知らせです。Key pointsAs in “予算について”, it shows the topic to be talked about or explained. In the form “〜についての報道”, の is added so that the group qualifies the following noun.
04Cause or purpose with ため
〜ため / 〜ために
また、同じパスワードを、ほかのサービスでも使っている場合は、念のため、変更することをお勧めします。Key pointsため is used for both reason and purpose. “成立ではないため” is a reason and “運転手を守るため” a purpose. Decide from the whole sentence whether what precedes is a cause or a goal.
05Giving examples with など
noun / expression + など
会員のデータベースからは、メールアドレス、ハッシュ化したパスワード、ニックネーム、生年月日などの、319件が流出しました。Key points“暴言など” gives “abusive language” as one example. It is not necessarily a closed list of only the things named. It also helps when reading the scope of a news story.
06The polite past ました
verb stem (連用形) + ました
電子書籍ストアの不正アクセスで、会員の情報が流出しました。Key pointsIn “発表しました”, ました makes a verb polite past. The negative is “ませんでした”. Read the actual date together with the date and time in the text.
