The essentials

Oricon’s list of autumn anime (updated 22 October) records a total of 73 new shows and sequels for the October period. Mentions of sequels such as “season 3” or “2nd Season” are numerous. Some works can also be seen first via streaming, not only on television.

A few examples

Here are examples that can be read in the list. Season 3 of “Kusuriya no hitorigoto” has been airing since 2 October on the Nippon TV network. “Pan Dorobō” has been airing since 2 October on NHK Educational. “Black Clover” 2nd Season starts on 3 October. “Vertex Force” has been airing since 3 October on TOKYO MX. The 2nd and 3rd STAGE of “JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: Steel Ball Run” have been available on Netflix since 25 September. “dreamland” airs on ABC from 17 October.

Finding where to watch

The online release date is sometimes given separately from the broadcast date. For example, some works show 25 September on Netflix or 6 November on Amazon Prime Video. Where and from when to watch depends on each work: the official site is the safest.

On this subject

As in yesterday’s article, “Kusuriya no hitorigoto” is to be the subject of a collaboration with USJ from February 2027. USJ’s official page says season 3 of the anime is broadcast in two parts from October 2026 and that the film is released on 11 December.

To keep in mind

The list page is updated regularly. Channels, schedules and streaming availability may change. This article uses only the information readable in the list. Check each work’s official site for the most recent information.

01The present indicative
Structure

est / sont + attribute (noun, adjective, prepositional phrase)

In the article
D’après la liste des anime d’automne lancés en octobre, 73 séries (nouveautés et suites) sont au programme.
Key points

Être in the present is est for a singular subject and sont for a plural one. It describes nature, state or place (“is”, “is located”). If what follows (the attribute) is a noun, adjective or prepositional phrase, it is not a passive. If a past participle follows, it is a passive (est annoncé). Headlines and summaries often use the present to describe the current situation.

02The passé composé
Structure

present of avoir + past participle

In the article
Les chiffres viennent des organismes ou médias cités ; JAPANITIES ne les a pas vérifiés.
Key points

The passé composé is the most common past tense, used for “did” and “has done” — actions completed in the past. It is formed with the auxiliary avoir (a / ont…) in the present + a past participle. Past participles of -er verbs end in -é (annoncer → annoncé); learn the irregular ones (faire → fait, prendre → pris, voir → vu). In the negative, ne … pas wraps the auxiliary (n’a pas annoncé). In the news it reports facts that have already happened, such as “announced” or “voted”.

03The passive voice in the present
Structure

être (est / sont) + past participle (+ par / de)

In the article
La saison 3 de « Kusuriya no hitorigoto » est diffusée depuis le 2 octobre sur le réseau Nippon TV.
Key points

The passive means “is done” or “is being done”. It is formed with être + past participle, which agrees with the subject in gender and number (la mesure est adoptée / les mesures sont adoptées). The agent is introduced by par (or de). In the news it is common when the event, rather than the actor, is the focus (est prévu / est annoncé / est connu).

04The imperative
Structure

present vous form (-ez) / nous (-ons) / tu

In the article
Consultez le site officiel de chaque œuvre pour les informations les plus récentes.
Key points

The imperative expresses commands, requests and advice. It has no subject: the sentence starts with the verb (Consultez les informations.). The vous form ends in -ez, nous in -ons (Restons prudents.), and tu in -e for -er verbs (Consulte). It is very common in notices and warnings (Vérifiez, Consultez, Restez informé).

05Pronominal verbs
Structure

se / s’ + verb

In the article
Les suites comme la saison 3 de « Kusuriya no hitorigoto » ou « Black Clover » saison 2 se remarquent.
Key points

A pronominal verb is used with a reflexive pronoun (me, te, se, nous, vous) before the verb. It can mean “do to oneself”, “be done” or “do to each other”. In the news, se traduire (to result in), se tenir (to take place), s’agir de (to be a matter of) and se diffuser (to spread) are frequent. The pronoun changes with the subject (il se tient / ils se tiennent / je me souviens).

06Pouvoir: ability and possibility
Structure

peut / peuvent / pourrait + infinitive

In the article
Chaînes, horaires et disponibilité en streaming peuvent changer.
Key points

Put a base-form verb after pouvoir. Peut means “can” or “may”; the conditional pourrait gives a more reserved possibility, “might”. It does not necessarily mean implementation is settled.

07Dates and their prepositions
Structure

le + 日付 / du … au …

In the article
La liste des anime d’automne d’Oricon (mise à jour du 22 octobre) recense au total 73 nouveautés et suites pour la période d’octobre.
Key points

Le 15 octobre means “on 15 October”. Distinguish the le before a date from the le that marks a weekly habit like a weekday. Du is de + le and au is à + le, so decide the meaning from the verb and period expressions around them. Their role depends on the group: a range of dates, the date of a bulletin or another complement.

08Marking a starting point
Structure

dès / depuis / à partir de + point in time

In the article
La saison 3 de « Kusuriya no hitorigoto » est diffusée depuis le 2 octobre sur le réseau Nippon TV. « Pan Dorobō » passe depuis le 2 octobre sur NHK Éducation. « Black Clover » 2nd Season débute le 3 octobre. « Vertex Force » est diffusé depuis le 3 octobre sur TOKYO MX.
Key points

Dès means “as early as” or “as soon as”, and à partir de means “from … onwards”. Depuis basically shows a state or period continuing from a point in time. All deal with a start, but they are not used the same way.

09Devoir: obligation or probability
Structure

doit / doivent / devrait + infinitive

In the article
Comme dans l’article d’hier, « Kusuriya no hitorigoto » doit faire l’objet d’une collaboration avec USJ à partir de février 2027.
Key points

Devoir + infinitive means “must”, but depending on context it can also mean “is expected to”. Devrait is conditional. In the news, judge from the context whether it is an obligation or a forecast.

10The uses of dans
Structure

dans + noun phrase

In the article
Voici des exemples lisibles dans la liste.
Key points

Dans means “in, inside” for places, but also for a scope such as a system or period. With future time, dans deux jours means “in two days”. In the article’s example, check what it is “inside” and which scope it marks. Identify the value of dans in the passage.

Japanese grammar

Understand the structure and usage from the text.

01Citing a source: によると
Structure

noun + によると

In the article
10月に始まった秋アニメの一覧によると、新作・続編は全73作品です。
Key points

As in “LCPによると”, it shows where the information comes from. What that source reported follows. It is used differently from “私にとって”, which gives one’s own opinion.

02Cause or purpose with ため
Structure

〜ため / 〜ために

In the article
どこで、いつから見られるかは、作品ごとに違うため、公式サイトで確認するのが確実です。
Key points

ため is used for both reason and purpose. “成立ではないため” is a reason and “運転手を守るため” a purpose. Decide from the whole sentence whether what precedes is a cause or a goal.

03Giving examples with など
Structure

noun / expression + など

In the article
『薬屋のひとりごと』第3期、『ブラッククローバー』2nd Seasonなど、続編が目立ちます。
Key points

“暴言など” gives “abusive language” as one example. It is not necessarily a closed list of only the things named. It also helps when reading the scope of a news story.

04The polite past ました
Structure

verb stem (連用形) + ました

In the article
『薬屋のひとりごと』第3期は、10月2日から、日本テレビ系で放送が始まりました。
Key points

In “発表しました”, ました makes a verb polite past. The negative is “ませんでした”. Read the actual date together with the date and time in the text.

05Treating a clause like a noun with こと
Structure

plain-form sentence + こと + particle

In the article
配信の開始日は、放送日とは別に書かれていることがあります。
Key points

“〜すること” treats an action or content like a noun. The particle after it (が・を・は…) shows its role in the sentence. “ことができる” is a fixed combination meaning “can”.

06Linking actions with the て-form
Structure

verb て-form + next expression

In the article
『ヴァーティックスフォース』は、10月3日から、TOKYO MXで放送されています。
Key points

The て-form links actions in a series, in order or as a reason. In “確認して、出発する” the relation is judged from the content. In “〜ている” it can show an action in progress or a continuing state.
