What event is this?

According to a JETRO report (9 October), IMAPS 2026 is the annual event of the IMAPS association, specialised in semiconductor assembly and packaging. It was held from 29 September to 1 October in Boston, Massachusetts, with about a hundred exhibitors and companies and institutes from around the world.

What does “advanced packaging” mean?

For a semiconductor, how several chips and memory are assembled in a small space, the packaging, strongly influences performance. For AI chips, the speed of exchange with memory, power consumption and heat are major challenges; this is why this technique is attracting attention.

Keynote and main presentations

In the opening keynote, Dr Chidambaram of Qualcomm presented “High-Bandwidth Compute (HBC)”, a three-dimensional assembly technique that places compute circuits directly under the DRAM, to address limits of bandwidth, power consumption and heat. Among the presentations: low-temperature direct copper-to-copper bonding (University of North Texas), formation of copper electrodes on glass (Osaka University and Okuno Chemical Industries) and a solder resist with high thermal conductivity (Taiyo Ink and Georgia Tech).

Japanese participation

Companies and institutes in materials, substrates, assembly equipment, chemistry and packaging, such as Ajinomoto and JX Metals, took part, and many Japanese people presented their work. The Consulate General of Japan in Boston organised a reception bringing together Japanese and American semiconductor players. Professor Tomás Palacios (MIT) mentioned the memorandum of understanding signed in September between the Institute of Science Tokyo and MIT, and stressed the importance of Japan–US cooperation.

Why does it matter?

For AI chips, the performance of the chip alone is not enough: the speed of exchange with memory, power consumption and heat are major challenges. The JETRO report says that, at Qualcomm’s opening keynote, more bandwidth and lower consumption were expected from this approach. It also shows that Japanese materials and equipment makers are involved in these assembly techniques.

01The present indicative
Structure

est / sont + attribute (noun, adjective, prepositional phrase)

In the article
Selon un rapport de la JETRO (9 octobre), IMAPS 2026 est l’événement annuel de l’association IMAPS, spécialisée dans l’assemblage et le packaging des semi-conducteurs.
Key points

Être in the present is est for a singular subject and sont for a plural one. It describes nature, state or place (“is”, “is located”). If what follows (the attribute) is a noun, adjective or prepositional phrase, it is not a passive. If a past participle follows, it is a passive (est annoncé). Headlines and summaries often use the present to describe the current situation.

02The passé composé
Structure

present of avoir + past participle

In the article
Selon la JETRO, de nombreuses entreprises et chercheurs japonais y ont présenté leurs travaux.
Key points

The passé composé is the most common past tense, used for “did” and “has done” — actions completed in the past. It is formed with the auxiliary avoir (a / ont…) in the present + a past participle. Past participles of -er verbs end in -é (annoncer → annoncé); learn the irregular ones (faire → fait, prendre → pris, voir → vu). In the negative, ne … pas wraps the auxiliary (n’a pas annoncé). In the news it reports facts that have already happened, such as “announced” or “voted”.

03The passé composé of pronominal verbs
Structure

se + present of être + past participle

In the article
Un événement international consacré au packaging des puces d’IA s’est tenu à Boston du 29 septembre au 1er octobre.
Key points

The passé composé of a pronominal verb (se + verb) always uses être as auxiliary (il s’est diffusé / elles se sont réunies). Se changes with the subject: me, te, se, nous, vous. The past participle usually agrees with the subject in gender and number.

04Pronominal verbs
Structure

se / s’ + verb

In the article
De quel événement s’agit-il ?
Key points

A pronominal verb is used with a reflexive pronoun (me, te, se, nous, vous) before the verb. It can mean “do to oneself”, “be done” or “do to each other”. In the news, se traduire (to result in), se tenir (to take place), s’agir de (to be a matter of) and se diffuser (to spread) are frequent. The pronoun changes with the subject (il se tient / ils se tiennent / je me souviens).

05Negation and its scope
Structure

ne / n’ … pas · ne … plus

In the article
Pour les puces d’IA, la performance de la puce ne suffit pas : la vitesse d’échange avec la mémoire, la consommation et la chaleur sont des défis majeurs.
Key points

Normally ne and pas wrap the verb. Before a vowel, ne becomes n’. Check which part of the sentence the negation covers. Ne … plus means “no longer”.

06Citing a source with selon
Structure

selon + noun / organisation

In the article
Selon la JETRO, de nombreuses entreprises et chercheurs japonais y ont présenté leurs travaux.
Key points

Selon means “according to”. Put a person or organisation after it as the source. It separates facts the writer checked directly from what another body or report said. Citing a source does not turn a forecast into an accomplished fact.

07The subject relative pronoun qui
Structure

noun + qui + verb

In the article
Lors de la conférence d’ouverture, le Dr Chidambaram de Qualcomm a présenté « High-Bandwidth Compute (HBC) », une technique d’assemblage en trois dimensions qui place les circuits de calcul directement sous la DRAM, afin de répondre aux limites de bande passante, de consommation et de chaleur.
Key points

Qui continues a description of the person or thing just mentioned (“the one that does…”). Because qui is itself the subject of the next verb, do not repeat the subject. The verb agrees with the noun qui refers to.

08The uses of dans
Structure

dans + noun phrase

In the article
Selon un rapport de la JETRO (9 octobre), IMAPS 2026 est l’événement annuel de l’association IMAPS, spécialisée dans l’assemblage et le packaging des semi-conducteurs.
Key points

Dans means “in, inside” for places, but also for a scope such as a system or period. With future time, dans deux jours means “in two days”. In the article’s example, check what it is “inside” and which scope it marks. Identify the value of dans in the passage.

09Coordination with et
Structure

word / group / clause + et + …

In the article
Il s’est tenu du 29 septembre au 1er octobre à Boston, dans le Massachusetts, avec une centaine d’exposants et des entreprises et instituts du monde entier.
Key points

Et joins not only words but also groups of nouns and whole clauses. Spot the two elements playing the same role to break up a long sentence. Et does not necessarily express cause and effect.

Explained in English

Japanese grammar

Understand the structure and usage from the text.

01Citing a source: によると
Structure

noun + によると

In the article
ジェトロの報告によると、日本の材料・装置メーカーや研究者も数多く発表しています。
Key points

As in “LCPによると”, it shows where the information comes from. What that source reported follows. It is used differently from “私にとって”, which gives one’s own opinion.

02Giving examples with など
Structure

noun / expression + など

In the article
技術発表には、ノーステキサス大学の低温での銅どうしの直接接合、大阪大学と奥野製薬工業のガラス基板への銅電極の形成、太陽インキ製造とジョージア工科大学の高熱伝導のソルダーレジストなどがありました。
Key points

“暴言など” gives “abusive language” as one example. It is not necessarily a closed list of only the things named. It also helps when reading the scope of a news story.

03The polite past ました
Structure

verb stem (連用形) + ました

In the article
AI向け半導体の組み立て技術を扱う国際イベントが、9月29日から10月1日まで米ボストンで開かれました。
Key points

In “発表しました”, ました makes a verb polite past. The negative is “ませんでした”. Read the actual date together with the date and time in the text.

04Quoting with と: content and report
Structure

plain-form sentence + と + verbe de parole (報じる, 説明する…)

In the article
ジェトロの報告は、クアルコムの基調講演で、この課題への対策として、高帯域幅化と省電力化への期待が示されたと伝えています。
Key points

と takes the content that is reported or explained. In “改定する方針だと報じました”, “改定する方針だ” is what the report said. Separating the content from who said it and how makes long sentences easier to read.

05Linking actions with the て-form
Structure

verb て-form + next expression

In the article
AI向けの半導体では、メモリとの間でデータをやり取りする速さや、消費電力と発熱が大きな課題で、この組み合わせ方が注目されています。
Key points

The て-form links actions in a series, in order or as a reason. In “確認して、出発する” the relation is judged from the content. In “〜ている” it can show an action in progress or a continuing state.

06Linking two nouns with の
Structure

noun A + の + noun B

In the article
ジェトロ(日本貿易振興機構)の報告(10月9日付)によると、「IMAPS 2026」は、半導体の実装・パッケージングの業界団体IMAPSが主催する年次イベントで、9月29日から10月1日まで、米国マサチューセッツ州ボストンで開かれました。
Key points

A explains noun B that follows. It is not only possession: the relation can be belonging, target, content and more. In “政府の案” and “年金の税控除”, read the relation from the context.
