What was announced?

According to Microsoft’s official blog (12 October), the company presented Maia 300, the third generation of its Azure Maia AI chip. The compute dies are made with TSMC’s N2P process. The chip carries eight stacks of HBM4 memory, with a maximum bandwidth of 18.0 TB/s and a thermal power of 950 W.

How big is a rack?

In the configuration of a rack of 96 accelerators, HBM capacity reaches 27.6 TB and aggregate bandwidth 1.7 PB/s, within an envelope of 167 kW.

What gains are announced?

Microsoft claims that Maia 300 processes 40% more tokens per megawatt than leading GPU-based systems. In the 96-accelerator configuration, rack-scale token throughput would be up to 7 times that of Maia 200. A token is the unit of text that an AI processes.

From when?

Maia 300 will go into production in 2027, with multi-gigawatt deployments. Maia 200 already runs Copilot and other services in the United States, Europe and Australia. GitHub Copilot and Microsoft Foundry are to run on Maia 200 by the end of 2026. No customer offering is mentioned.

To keep in mind

The performance figures come from Microsoft itself; they have not been verified by third parties. The technical details are to be presented next month at Microsoft Ignite 2026.

Why does it matter?

The computation that lets an AI produce text or an answer is called inference; it uses a lot of energy and memory. Microsoft highlights the number of tokens processed per megawatt. This announcement therefore shows that competition is not only about speed but also about what you get for a given amount of energy. The figures, however, come from Microsoft itself and have not been verified by third parties.

French grammar

Learn sentence patterns and usage from the article’s own sentences.

01The present indicative
Structure

est / sont + attribute (noun, adjective, prepositional phrase)

In the article
Les chiffres sont ceux de l’entreprise ; le déploiement en production commence en 2027.
Key points

Être in the present is est for a singular subject and sont for a plural one. It describes nature, state or place (“is”, “is located”). If what follows (the attribute) is a noun, adjective or prepositional phrase, it is not a passive. If a past participle follows, it is a passive (est annoncé). Headlines and summaries often use the present to describe the current situation.

02The passé composé
Structure

present of avoir + past participle

In the article
Microsoft a présenté le 12 octobre Maia 300, la troisième génération de sa puce d’IA.
Key points

The passé composé is the most common past tense, used for “did” and “has done” — actions completed in the past. It is formed with the auxiliary avoir (a / ont…) in the present + a past participle. Past participles of -er verbs end in -é (annoncer → annoncé); learn the irregular ones (faire → fait, prendre → pris, voir → vu). In the negative, ne … pas wraps the auxiliary (n’a pas annoncé). In the news it reports facts that have already happened, such as “announced” or “voted”.

03The futur simple
Structure

stem (infinitive) + -ai / -as / -a / -ons / -ez / -ont

In the article
Maia 300 entrera en production en 2027, avec des déploiements de plusieurs gigawatts.
Key points

The futur simple means “will do” or “is planned to”. Add -ai, -as, -a, -ons, -ez, -ont to the infinitive (participer → il participera). Watch the irregular stems: être → ser-, avoir → aur-, aller → ir-, faire → fer-, pouvoir → pourr-, voir → verr-. In the news it is used for fixed plans and outlooks.

04The present conditional
Structure

stem (infinitive) + -ais / -ait / -ions / -iez / -aient

In the article
Dans la configuration à 96 accélérateurs, le débit de tokens à l’échelle du rack serait jusqu’à 7 fois supérieur à celui de Maia 200.
Key points

The conditional expresses possibility, supposition, unconfirmed information and polite requests (“would”, “might”). It uses the same stem as the future and the same endings as the imparfait (-ais, -ait, -ions, -iez, -aient): pouvoir → il pourrait. In the news it is used to avoid asserting, as in “is reported to…” or “there is a possibility…”.

05The passive voice in the present
Structure

être (est / sont) + past participle (+ par / de)

In the article
Les puces de calcul sont gravées avec le procédé N2P de TSMC.
Key points

The passive means “is done” or “is being done”. It is formed with être + past participle, which agrees with the subject in gender and number (la mesure est adoptée / les mesures sont adoptées). The agent is introduced by par (or de). In the news it is common when the event, rather than the actor, is the focus (est prévu / est annoncé / est connu).

06The passive in the passé composé
Structure

a / ont été + past participle

In the article
Qu’est-ce qui a été annoncé ?
Key points

The past passive means “was done”. Its form is present of avoir + été (past participle of être) + past participle. Été does not change, but the last participle agrees with the subject in gender and number (la loi a été votée / les textes ont été votés). It is frequent in news reporting results such as votes, decisions and announcements.

07Negation and its scope
Structure

ne / n’ … pas · ne … plus

In the article
Aucune offre pour les clients n’est mentionnée.
Key points

Normally ne and pas wrap the verb. Before a vowel, ne becomes n’. Check which part of the sentence the negation covers. Ne … plus means “no longer”.

08The subject relative pronoun qui
Structure

noun + qui + verb

In the article
Le calcul qui permet à une IA de produire un texte ou une réponse s’appelle l’inférence ; il consomme beaucoup d’énergie et de mémoire.
Key points

Qui continues a description of the person or thing just mentioned (“the one that does…”). Because qui is itself the subject of the next verb, do not repeat the subject. The verb agrees with the noun qui refers to.

09Dates and their prepositions
Structure

le + 日付 / du … au …

In the article
Microsoft a présenté le 12 octobre Maia 300, la troisième génération de sa puce d’IA.
Key points

Le 15 octobre means “on 15 October”. Distinguish the le before a date from the le that marks a weekly habit like a weekday. Du is de + le and au is à + le, so decide the meaning from the verb and period expressions around them. Their role depends on the group: a range of dates, the date of a bulletin or another complement.

10Marking an opposition or a reservation
Structure

mais / cependant / toutefois / en revanche

In the article
Cette annonce montre donc que la compétition porte non seulement sur la vitesse, mais aussi sur ce qu’on obtient pour une quantité d’énergie donnée.
Key points

These continue with something that contrasts with the preceding content, or a reservation to note. Mais is the widely usable “but” and en revanche stresses the contrast. After the connector, information may come that corrects the first impression.

11Devoir: obligation or probability
Structure

doit / doivent / devrait + infinitive

In the article
GitHub Copilot et Microsoft Foundry doivent fonctionner sur Maia 200 d’ici la fin de 2026.
Key points

Devoir + infinitive means “must”, but depending on context it can also mean “is expected to”. Devrait is conditional. In the news, judge from the context whether it is an obligation or a forecast.

01Citing a source: によると
Structure

noun + によると

In the article
Microsoftの公式ブログ(12日)によると、発表されたのは自社設計のAIチップ「Azure Maia」の第3世代にあたる「Maia 300」です。
Key points

As in “LCPによると”, it shows where the information comes from. What that source reported follows. It is used differently from “私にとって”, which gives one’s own opinion.

02Defining a term with とは
Structure

noun + とは

In the article
トークンとは、AIが文章を処理するときの単位です。
Key points

It takes up a word, as in “在留資格とは?”, and asks for its meaning. In explanations it is used as “〜とは、…です”. Here the quotation と and the topic は are combined.

03Plan, outlook and policy
Structure

〜の予定 / 〜見込み / 〜方針

In the article
数ギガワット規模の展開も2027年からで、Maiaを自社製品・サービスの主な推論システムにする方針です。
Key points

予定 is a plan, 見込み a forecast and 方針 a course of action or intention. None of them asserts that something has already been carried out. Note the difference from expressions such as “決まりました”.

04Polite negation and plain form
Structure

〜ではありません / 〜ではない

In the article
第三者による検証ではありません。
Key points

They negate a noun and similar content. “ではありません” is the polite form and “ではない” the plain form. “成立ではありません” shows that it cannot be said to have been concluded.

05Indicating the subject: について
Structure

noun + について

In the article
顧客向けの提供については、記載がありません。
Key points

As in “予算について”, it shows the topic to be talked about or explained. In the form “〜についての報道”, の is added so that the group qualifies the following noun.

06Giving examples with など
Structure

noun / expression + など

In the article
前の世代のMaia 200はすでにCopilotなどを動かしていて、米国・欧州・オーストラリアで展開中です。
Key points

“暴言など” gives “abusive language” as one example. It is not necessarily a closed list of only the things named. It also helps when reading the scope of a news story.
