The essentials

Around 21 October, Microsoft announced that a group said to be linked to China, “Storm-0940”, had broken into the IT company ConnectWise and used it as a springboard to target hundreds of organisations worldwide. According to Microsoft, more than 2,250 “Microsoft 365” tenants were targeted.

What method?

The group used “ARTEX”, an open-source, freely available penetration-testing framework in which AI agents automate reconnaissance, searching for flaws, password attacks and data theft. Microsoft says it was in use as early as September against government agencies, defence contractors, banks, manufacturers and technology companies.

The figures

From 10 to 14 October, the group caused more than 151,000 failed sign-ins against 327 accounts at eight organisations, by successive password attempts, with no successful sign-in according to Microsoft. The attack then switched to exploiting ConnectWise application identities. At its peak, it tried to authenticate up to 2,900 times per minute. In some cases, less than three hours passed between choosing the target and obtaining privileged access to the cloud.

ConnectWise’s response

After discovering unauthorised access to application identities, ConnectWise suspended its Cloud Backup, SaaS Security and Cloud Management services. Its CEO Manny Rivelo says he contained the affected connections and is gradually restoring services, while warning that cutting these connections is not always enough to drive out attackers already installed at customers. Microsoft did not reveal how many customers were compromised or whether data was stolen.

To keep in mind

This information rests on Microsoft’s announcement; the Chinese embassy is said to reject the accusations. The label “China-linked” varies between media (some speak of state alignment) and remains imprecise. IT managers are urged to check application permissions and sign-in logs.

Why it matters

Even if your company is not targeted directly, the compromise of an IT provider can open a door through existing connections. Cloud administrators should regularly check the permissions granted to external applications and the sign-in logs.

Learn sentence patterns and usage from the article’s own sentences.

01The present indicative
Structure

est / sont + attribute (noun, adjective, prepositional phrase)

In the article
Les dates d’annonce, des faits et de vérification sont distinctes.
Key points

Être in the present is est for a singular subject and sont for a plural one. It describes nature, state or place (“is”, “is located”). If what follows (the attribute) is a noun, adjective or prepositional phrase, it is not a passive. If a past participle follows, it is a passive (est annoncé). Headlines and summaries often use the present to describe the current situation.

02The passé composé
Structure

present of avoir + past participle

In the article
Microsoft : un groupe lié à la Chine a utilisé l’IA pour viser 2 250 tenants, à partir de l’intrusion chez ConnectWise
Key points

The passé composé is the most common past tense, used for “did” and “has done” — actions completed in the past. It is formed with the auxiliary avoir (a / ont…) in the present + a past participle. Past participles of -er verbs end in -é (annoncer → annoncé); learn the irregular ones (faire → fait, prendre → pris, voir → vu). In the negative, ne … pas wraps the auxiliary (n’a pas annoncé). In the news it reports facts that have already happened, such as “announced” or “voted”.

03The passé composé of pronominal verbs
Structure

se + present of être + past participle

In the article
Dans certains cas, il s’est écoulé moins de trois heures entre le choix de la cible et l’obtention d’un accès privilégié au cloud.
Key points

The passé composé of a pronominal verb (se + verb) always uses être as auxiliary (il s’est diffusé / elles se sont réunies). Se changes with the subject: me, te, se, nous, vous. The past participle usually agrees with the subject in gender and number.

04The imparfait
Structure

stem (nous form of the present) + -ais / -ait / -ions / -iez / -aient

In the article
Microsoft a annoncé qu’un groupe dit lié à la Chine, « Storm-0940 », avait utilisé l’outil d’attaque à base d’IA « ARTEX » pour pénétrer chez ConnectWise et viser plus de 2 250 environnements cloud.
Key points

The imparfait describes states, background, habits and actions in progress in the past (il était, elle avait, ils pensaient). Take the nous form of the present, drop -ons, and add -ais / -ais / -ait / -ions / -iez / -aient. If the passé composé gives “the event itself”, the imparfait paints “the situation at the time”.

05The passive voice in the present
Structure

être (est / sont) + past participle (+ par / de)

In the article
Vers le 21 octobre, Microsoft a annoncé qu’un groupe dit lié à la Chine, « Storm-0940 », avait pénétré chez la société informatique ConnectWise et s’en était servi comme tremplin pour viser des centaines d’organisations dans le monde.
Key points

The passive means “is done” or “is being done”. It is formed with être + past participle, which agrees with the subject in gender and number (la mesure est adoptée / les mesures sont adoptées). The agent is introduced by par (or de). In the news it is common when the event, rather than the actor, is the focus (est prévu / est annoncé / est connu).

06The passive in the passé composé
Structure

a / ont été + past participle

In the article
Selon Microsoft, plus de 2 250 tenants « Microsoft 365 » ont été visés.
Key points

The past passive means “was done”. Its form is present of avoir + été (past participle of être) + past participle. Été does not change, but the last participle agrees with the subject in gender and number (la loi a été votée / les textes ont été votés). It is frequent in news reporting results such as votes, decisions and announcements.

07The gerund
Structure

en + present participle (-ant)

In the article
Son PDG Manny Rivelo dit avoir contenu les connexions touchées et rétablir peu à peu les services, tout en avertissant que couper ces connexions ne suffit pas toujours à chasser des attaquants déjà installés chez les clients.
Key points

The gerund means “while doing”, “by doing” or “when doing”. Its form is en + present participle (-ant). Take the nous form of the present, drop -ons and add -ant (faire → faisant). The subject is normally that of the main clause. It shows things happening at the same time, or the means.

08Negation and its scope
Structure

ne / n’ … pas · ne … plus

In the article
Son PDG Manny Rivelo dit avoir contenu les connexions touchées et rétablir peu à peu les services, tout en avertissant que couper ces connexions ne suffit pas toujours à chasser des attaquants déjà installés chez les clients.
Key points

Normally ne and pas wrap the verb. Before a vowel, ne becomes n’. Check which part of the sentence the negation covers. Ne … plus means “no longer”.

09Citing a source with selon
Structure

selon + noun / organisation

In the article
Selon Microsoft, plus de 2 250 tenants « Microsoft 365 » ont été visés.
Key points

Selon means “according to”. Put a person or organisation after it as the source. It separates facts the writer checked directly from what another body or report said. Citing a source does not turn a forecast into an accomplished fact.

10Pouvoir: ability and possibility
Structure

peut / peuvent / pourrait + infinitive

In the article
L’« open source » désigne un code publié que chacun peut utiliser.
Key points

Put a base-form verb after pouvoir. Peut means “can” or “may”; the conditional pourrait gives a more reserved possibility, “might”. It does not necessarily mean implementation is settled.

11Expressing a plan or a deadline
Structure

être prévu / prévoir / être envisagé

In the article
Même si votre entreprise n’est pas visée directement, la compromission d’un prestataire informatique peut ouvrir une porte par les connexions existantes.
Key points

Prévoir means “to plan, to expect”. Être prévu means “to be scheduled” and être envisagé means “to be under consideration”. In the news, read them separately from expressions that describe events that have already happened. They do not say that the event has already taken place.

12Purpose with pour
Structure

pour + infinitive

In the article
Microsoft a annoncé qu’un groupe dit lié à la Chine, « Storm-0940 », avait utilisé l’outil d’attaque à base d’IA « ARTEX » pour pénétrer chez ConnectWise et viser plus de 2 250 environnements cloud.
Key points

This is the purpose, “in order to…”. Put the base form of a verb after pour. The purpose stated here is separate from whether the effect was actually achieved.

01Citing a source: によると
Structure

noun + によると

In the article
マイクロソフトによると、標的になった「Microsoft 365」のテナントは、2,250を超えます。
Key points

As in “LCPによると”, it shows where the information comes from. What that source reported follows. It is used differently from “私にとって”, which gives one’s own opinion.

02Cause or purpose with ため
Structure

〜ため / 〜ために

In the article
ただし、すでに侵入した相手が、顧客の環境に、足場を残している場合があるため、接続を止めるだけでは、攻撃者を完全には排除できない、と注意しています。
Key points

ため is used for both reason and purpose. “成立ではないため” is a reason and “運転手を守るため” a purpose. Decide from the whole sentence whether what precedes is a cause or a goal.

03Giving examples with など
Structure

noun / expression + など

In the article
マイクロソフトは、「Storm-0940」と呼ぶ、中国系とされる集団が、AIを使う攻撃ツール「ARTEX」で、ConnectWiseに侵入し、2,250を超える企業などのクラウドを、狙ったと発表しました。
Key points

“暴言など” gives “abusive language” as one example. It is not necessarily a closed list of only the things named. It also helps when reading the scope of a news story.

04The polite past ました
Structure

verb stem (連用形) + ました

In the article
マイクロソフトは、10月21日ごろ、中国系とされる集団「Storm-0940」が、IT企業のConnectWiseに侵入して、そこを足がかりに、世界の、数百の組織を狙ったと発表しました。
Key points

In “発表しました”, ました makes a verb polite past. The negative is “ませんでした”. Read the actual date together with the date and time in the text.

05Quoting with と: content and report
Structure

plain-form sentence + と + verbe de parole (報じる, 説明する…)

In the article
マイクロソフトは、9月ごろから、政府機関、防衛関連企業、銀行、製造業、IT企業などへの攻撃に、使われていたと説明しています。
Key points

と takes the content that is reported or explained. In “改定する方針だと報じました”, “改定する方針だ” is what the report said. Separating the content from who said it and how makes long sentences easier to read.

06Treating a clause like a noun with こと
Structure

plain-form sentence + こと + particle

In the article
パスワードを次々に試す攻撃で、成功したログインは、なかったということです。
Key points

“〜すること” treats an action or content like a noun. The particle after it (が・を・は…) shows its role in the sentence. “ことができる” is a fixed combination meaning “can”.
