The essentials

According to TechCrunch, Apple unveiled on Monday 26 October a new iPad mini with an 8.5-inch Super Retina XDR OLED display, larger than that of the previous model, and the A20 Pro chip. In the United States it costs $699 for Wi-Fi and $849 for Wi-Fi + cellular, with pre-orders from 28 October and availability on 6 November. The announcement comes a few days before the “Pro and Tell” event planned for Wednesday.

The display

According to Apple, peak brightness reaches 1,200 nits, more than double the previous generation, and 600 nits full-screen in both SDR and HDR. The contrast ratio is 2 million to 1 and the P3 colour gamut is supported. A nano-texture display that reduces reflections is offered as an option, as on the iPad Pro.

Performance and other new features

According to Apple, the A20 Pro chip, with a 6-core CPU, offers up to 60% more multitasking performance; the 7-core GPU, with a Neural Accelerator in each core, is up to 4.5 times faster for AI. The device is 5.4 mm thick and is thinner and lighter. The front camera is a 12-megapixel Center Stage camera. The “Acoustic Display” integrates bass speakers into the screen. It arrives with the new generation of Apple Intelligence and Siri.

What we do not know yet

The article consulted does not give the storage capacities, the rear camera, the colour names, the weight, the battery life, the ports or biometrics, accessory compatibility, or prices and dates outside the United States.

French grammar

Learn sentence patterns and usage from the article’s own sentences.

01The present indicative
Structure

est / sont + attribute (noun, adjective, prepositional phrase)

In the article
Le rapport de contraste est de 2 millions pour 1 et la gamme colorimétrique P3 est prise en charge.
Key points

Être in the present is est for a singular subject and sont for a plural one. It describes nature, state or place (“is”, “is located”). If what follows (the attribute) is a noun, adjective or prepositional phrase, it is not a passive. If a past participle follows, it is a passive (est annoncé). Headlines and summaries often use the present to describe the current situation.

02The passé composé
Structure

present of avoir + past participle

In the article
Apple a présenté le 26 octobre un nouvel iPad mini avec écran OLED et puce A20 Pro, à partir de 699 dollars aux États-Unis.
Key points

The passé composé is the most common past tense, used for “did” and “has done” — actions completed in the past. It is formed with the auxiliary avoir (a / ont…) in the present + a past participle. Past participles of -er verbs end in -é (annoncer → annoncé); learn the irregular ones (faire → fait, prendre → pris, voir → vu). In the negative, ne … pas wraps the auxiliary (n’a pas annoncé). In the news it reports facts that have already happened, such as “announced” or “voted”.

03The passive voice in the present
Structure

être (est / sont) + past participle (+ par / de)

In the article
Un écran à nano-texture réduisant les reflets est proposé en option, comme sur l’iPad Pro.
Key points

The passive means “is done” or “is being done”. It is formed with être + past participle, which agrees with the subject in gender and number (la mesure est adoptée / les mesures sont adoptées). The agent is introduced by par (or de). In the news it is common when the event, rather than the actor, is the focus (est prévu / est annoncé / est connu).

04Negation and its scope
Structure

ne / n’ … pas · ne … plus

In the article
L’article consulté n’indique ni les capacités de stockage, ni l’appareil photo arrière, ni le nom des coloris, ni le poids, ni l’autonomie, ni les ports ou la biométrie, ni la compatibilité des accessoires, ni les prix et dates hors des États-Unis.
Key points

Normally ne and pas wrap the verb. Before a vowel, ne becomes n’. Check which part of the sentence the negation covers. Ne … plus means “no longer”.

05Citing a source with selon
Structure

selon + noun / organisation

In the article
Selon TechCrunch, Apple a présenté le lundi 26 octobre un nouvel iPad mini avec un écran OLED Super Retina XDR de 8,5 pouces, plus grand que celui du modèle précédent, et la puce A20 Pro.
Key points

Selon means “according to”. Put a person or organisation after it as the source. It separates facts the writer checked directly from what another body or report said. Citing a source does not turn a forecast into an accomplished fact.

06Expressing a plan or a deadline
Structure

être prévu / prévoir / être envisagé

In the article
L’annonce intervient quelques jours avant l’événement « Pro and Tell » prévu mercredi.
Key points

Prévoir means “to plan, to expect”. Être prévu means “to be scheduled” and être envisagé means “to be under consideration”. In the news, read them separately from expressions that describe events that have already happened. They do not say that the event has already taken place.

07Dates and their prepositions
Structure

le + 日付 / du … au …

In the article
Apple a présenté le 26 octobre un nouvel iPad mini avec écran OLED et puce A20 Pro, à partir de 699 dollars aux États-Unis.
Key points

Le 15 octobre means “on 15 October”. Distinguish the le before a date from the le that marks a weekly habit like a weekday. Du is de + le and au is à + le, so decide the meaning from the verb and period expressions around them. Their role depends on the group: a range of dates, the date of a bulletin or another complement.

08Marking a starting point
Structure

dès / depuis / à partir de + point in time

In the article
Aux États-Unis, il coûte 699 dollars en Wi-Fi et 849 dollars en Wi-Fi + cellulaire, avec précommandes dès le 28 octobre et disponibilité le 6 novembre.
Key points

Dès means “as early as” or “as soon as”, and à partir de means “from … onwards”. Depuis basically shows a state or period continuing from a point in time. All deal with a start, but they are not used the same way.

Explained in English

Japanese grammar

Understand the structure and usage from the text.

01Citing a source: によると
Structure

noun + によると

In the article
TechCrunchによると、アップルは、26日(月)に、新しい「iPad mini」を発表しました。
Key points

As in “LCPによると”, it shows where the information comes from. What that source reported follows. It is used differently from “私にとって”, which gives one’s own opinion.

02The polite past ました
Structure

verb stem (連用形) + ました

In the article
アップルは、26日、有機EL(OLED)の画面と、A20 Proチップをのせた、新しい「iPad mini」を発表しました。
Key points

In “発表しました”, ました makes a verb polite past. The negative is “ませんでした”. Read the actual date together with the date and time in the text.

03Linking actions with the て-form
Structure

verb て-form + next expression

In the article
水曜日に、アップルのイベント「Pro and Tell」が予定されていて、その数日前の発表でした。
Key points

The て-form links actions in a series, in order or as a reason. In “確認して、出発する” the relation is judged from the content. In “〜ている” it can show an action in progress or a continuing state.

04Linking two nouns with の
Structure

noun A + の + noun B

In the article
画面は、8.5インチの有機EL(Super Retina XDR)で、前のモデルより大きくなりました。
Key points

A explains noun B that follows. It is not only possession: the relation can be belonging, target, content and more. In “政府の案” and “年金の税控除”, read the relation from the context.

05The topic marked by は
Structure

noun / noun phrase + は

In the article
アメリカでの値段は、Wi-Fiモデルが699ドルからです。
Key points

は shows what the sentence is about; an explanation of that topic follows. は and が are not always interchangeable: contrast and the way information is placed change.
