The figures announced
On 28 October Microsoft announced revenue of $92.3 billion for the quarter ended 30 September, up 19% year on year. Microsoft Cloud reached $63.9 billion, a rise of 30%.
Why talk about 2027?
The company calls this period the first quarter of its 2027 fiscal year. A fiscal year does not necessarily coincide with the calendar year. These results cover July to September 2026, not events that have already happened in 2027.
Revenue and profit
Revenue measures income from sales; profit takes account of costs and other items. Net income under the accounting standards announced reached $36.6 billion. Revenue growth does not automatically mean profit growth.
Understanding the cloud
The cloud lets you use computing resources and services over a network. In financial results, you must also distinguish past performance from forecasts. Announced growth guarantees neither future results nor the movement of a share price.

01Negation and its scope
ne / n’ … pas · ne … plus
Un exercice comptable ne coïncide pas nécessairement avec l’année civile.Key pointsNormally ne and pas wrap the verb. Before a vowel, ne becomes n’. Check which part of the sentence the negation covers. Ne … plus means “no longer”.
02Citing a source with selon
selon + noun / organisation
Le bénéfice net selon les normes comptables annoncées atteint 36,6 milliards de dollars.Key pointsSelon means “according to”. Put a person or organisation after it as the source. It separates facts the writer checked directly from what another body or report said. Citing a source does not turn a forecast into an accomplished fact.
03The passé composé for events
present of avoir + past participle
Microsoft a annoncé le 28 octobre un chiffre d’affaires de 92,3 milliards de dollars pour le trimestre clos le 30 septembre, en hausse de 19 % sur un an.Key pointsIt reports past events, as in “announced” or “explained”. A / ont is the auxiliary avoir and the next word is the past participle. The passé composé alone does not tell you the date of the event.
04Dates and their prepositions
le + 日付 / du … au …
Les résultats du premier trimestre de l’exercice 2027, publiés le 28 octobre, couvrent juillet à septembre 2026.Key pointsLe 15 octobre means “on 15 October”. Distinguish the le before a date from the le that marks a weekly habit like a weekday. Du is de + le and au is à + le, so decide the meaning from the verb and period expressions around them. Their role depends on the group: a range of dates, the date of a bulletin or another complement.
05Million and milliard followed by de
number + million(s) / milliard(s) + de + noun
Microsoft a annoncé le 28 octobre un chiffre d’affaires de 92,3 milliards de dollars pour le trimestre clos le 30 septembre, en hausse de 19 % sur un an.Key pointsMillion and milliard are nouns, so use de before what is counted. Before a vowel it becomes d’. Mille works differently: look at the quantity as a whole instead of applying the same form.
06The uses of dans
dans + noun phrase
Dans des résultats financiers, il faut aussi distinguer les performances passées des prévisions.Key pointsDans means “in, inside” for places, but also for a scope such as a system or period. With future time, dans deux jours means “in two days”. In the article’s example, check what it is “inside” and which scope it marks. Identify the value of dans in the passage.

01Rejecting an interpretation
〜わけではない / 〜という意味ではない
2027年にすでに起きた出来事という意味ではなく、2026年7~9月の業績です。Key pointsThese forms limit and deny an interpretation: “it does not necessarily follow” or “that is not what is meant”. They do not necessarily deny every fact in the sentence. Read what is being denied together with the earlier part.
02Polite negation and plain form
〜ではありません / 〜ではない
企業が成長を報告しても、将来の業績や株価を保証するものではありません。Key pointsThey negate a noun and similar content. “ではありません” is the polite form and “ではない” the plain form. “成立ではありません” shows that it cannot be said to have been concluded.
03Giving examples with など
noun / expression + など
売上高は商品やサービスの販売による収入で、利益は費用などを考慮した別の指標です。Key points“暴言など” gives “abusive language” as one example. It is not necessarily a closed list of only the things named. It also helps when reading the scope of a news story.
04The polite past ました
verb stem (連用形) + ました
Microsoftは28日、9月30日までの四半期の売上高が923億ドルで、前年同期より19%増えたと発表しました。Key pointsIn “発表しました”, ました makes a verb polite past. The negative is “ませんでした”. Read the actual date together with the date and time in the text.
05Quoting with と: content and report
plain-form sentence + と + verbe de parole (報じる, 説明する…)
Microsoftは28日、9月30日までの四半期の売上高が923億ドルで、前年同期より19%増えたと発表しました。Key pointsと takes the content that is reported or explained. In “改定する方針だと報じました”, “改定する方針だ” is what the report said. Separating the content from who said it and how makes long sentences easier to read.
06Treating a clause like a noun with こと
plain-form sentence + こと + particle
売上高が増えた割合を、そのまま利益の増加率として読むことはできません。Key points“〜すること” treats an action or content like a noun. The particle after it (が・を・は…) shows its role in the sentence. “ことができる” is a fixed combination meaning “can”.
