The announcement

On 30 October (local time), Google announced that it had received, from the prototype satellite of “Project Suncatcher” (AI computing in space), the first AI response produced by a TPU in orbit. According to the company, this is the first time a data-center-class TPU has responded from orbit — a milestone it compares to the “Hello World” of beginner programmers.

The haiku experiment

The prototype was launched on 1 October on a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket. Over the following weeks the team powered up the modules and ran initial machine-learning tests. This time, during a pass over a ground station, it asked the onboard open model Gemma 4 to write a haiku on the theme of space; the poem arrived as the satellite flew over Svalbard, Norway. Google’s blog says it is an English haiku evoking the blue Earth, streams of data and the light of the stars.

The next tests

Google says it will continue a series of tests to evaluate how the TPU behaves under thermal stress and radiation exposure in orbit. If the chips can reliably run workloads in space, that will pave the way for the next step planned for 2027: two interconnected satellites.

The background

According to ITmedia, Suncatcher is a long-term research project announced in November 2025. Satellites in low orbit receive sunlight almost constantly and could generate up to eight times more solar power than on the ground, so Google is studying the feasibility of large-scale AI computing by a constellation of TPU-equipped satellites. The prototype was developed with Planet Labs. The project remains at the research stage; no date for operational use could be confirmed here.

Explained in English

French grammar

Learn sentence patterns and usage from the article’s own sentences.

01The present indicative
Structure

est / sont + attribute (noun, adjective, prepositional phrase)

In the article
D’après l’entreprise, c’est la première fois qu’un TPU de classe centre de données répond ainsi depuis l’orbite : un jalon qu’elle compare au « Hello World » des débutants en programmation.
Key points

Être in the present is est for a singular subject and sont for a plural one. It describes nature, state or place (“is”, “is located”). If what follows (the attribute) is a noun, adjective or prepositional phrase, it is not a passive. If a past participle follows, it is a passive (est annoncé). Headlines and summaries often use the present to describe the current situation.

02The passé composé
Structure

present of avoir + past participle

In the article
Le prototype de satellite du projet Suncatcher a renvoyé la toute première réponse d’IA produite par un TPU en orbite.
Key points

The passé composé is the most common past tense, used for “did” and “has done” — actions completed in the past. It is formed with the auxiliary avoir (a / ont…) in the present + a past participle. Past participles of -er verbs end in -é (annoncer → annoncé); learn the irregular ones (faire → fait, prendre → pris, voir → vu). In the negative, ne … pas wraps the auxiliary (n’a pas annoncé). In the news it reports facts that have already happened, such as “announced” or “voted”.

03The imparfait
Structure

stem (nous form of the present) + -ais / -ait / -ions / -iez / -aient

In the article
Cette fois, lors d’un passage au-dessus d’une station au sol, elle a demandé au modèle ouvert Gemma 4 embarqué d’écrire un haïku sur le thème de l’espace ; le poème a été reçu quand le satellite survolait le Svalbard, en Norvège.
Key points

The imparfait describes states, background, habits and actions in progress in the past (il était, elle avait, ils pensaient). Take the nous form of the present, drop -ons, and add -ais / -ais / -ait / -ions / -iez / -aient. If the passé composé gives “the event itself”, the imparfait paints “the situation at the time”.

04The futur simple
Structure

stem (infinitive) + -ai / -as / -a / -ons / -ez / -ont

In the article
Si les puces peuvent exécuter fiablement des charges de travail dans l’espace, cela ouvrira la voie à la prochaine étape prévue en 2027 : deux satellites interconnectés.
Key points

The futur simple means “will do” or “is planned to”. Add -ai, -as, -a, -ons, -ez, -ont to the infinitive (participer → il participera). Watch the irregular stems: être → ser-, avoir → aur-, aller → ir-, faire → fer-, pouvoir → pourr-, voir → verr-. In the news it is used for fixed plans and outlooks.

05The passive voice in the present
Structure

être (est / sont) + past participle (+ par / de)

In the article
Les dates des faits et des annonces sont précisées dans le texte.
Key points

The passive means “is done” or “is being done”. It is formed with être + past participle, which agrees with the subject in gender and number (la mesure est adoptée / les mesures sont adoptées). The agent is introduced by par (or de). In the news it is common when the event, rather than the actor, is the focus (est prévu / est annoncé / est connu).

06The passive in the passé composé
Structure

a / ont été + past participle

In the article
Le prototype a été lancé le 1er octobre par une fusée Falcon 9 de SpaceX.
Key points

The past passive means “was done”. Its form is present of avoir + été (past participle of être) + past participle. Été does not change, but the last participle agrees with the subject in gender and number (la loi a été votée / les textes ont été votés). It is frequent in news reporting results such as votes, decisions and announcements.

07Pronominal verbs
Structure

se / s’ + verb

In the article
Le blog de Google précise qu’il s’agit d’un haïku en anglais évoquant la Terre bleue, les flux de données et la lumière des étoiles.
Key points

A pronominal verb is used with a reflexive pronoun (me, te, se, nous, vous) before the verb. It can mean “do to oneself”, “be done” or “do to each other”. In the news, se traduire (to result in), se tenir (to take place), s’agir de (to be a matter of) and se diffuser (to spread) are frequent. The pronoun changes with the subject (il se tient / ils se tiennent / je me souviens).

08Negation and its scope
Structure

ne / n’ … pas · ne … plus

In the article
Le projet reste au stade de la recherche ; aucune date de mise en service n’a pu être confirmée ici.
Key points

Normally ne and pas wrap the verb. Before a vowel, ne becomes n’. Check which part of the sentence the negation covers. Ne … plus means “no longer”.

09Citing a source with selon
Structure

selon + noun / organisation

In the article
Selon ITmedia, Suncatcher est un projet de recherche à long terme annoncé en novembre 2025.
Key points

Selon means “according to”. Put a person or organisation after it as the source. It separates facts the writer checked directly from what another body or report said. Citing a source does not turn a forecast into an accomplished fact.

10Pouvoir: ability and possibility
Structure

peut / peuvent / pourrait + infinitive

In the article
Si les puces peuvent exécuter fiablement des charges de travail dans l’espace, cela ouvrira la voie à la prochaine étape prévue en 2027 : deux satellites interconnectés.
Key points

Put a base-form verb after pouvoir. Peut means “can” or “may”; the conditional pourrait gives a more reserved possibility, “might”. It does not necessarily mean implementation is settled.

11Expressing a plan or a deadline
Structure

être prévu / prévoir / être envisagé

In the article
Si les puces peuvent exécuter fiablement des charges de travail dans l’espace, cela ouvrira la voie à la prochaine étape prévue en 2027 : deux satellites interconnectés.
Key points

Prévoir means “to plan, to expect”. Être prévu means “to be scheduled” and être envisagé means “to be under consideration”. In the news, read them separately from expressions that describe events that have already happened. They do not say that the event has already taken place.

12Purpose with pour
Structure

pour + infinitive

In the article
Google indique poursuivre une série de tests pour évaluer le comportement du TPU sous contrainte thermique et exposition aux radiations en orbite.
Key points

This is the purpose, “in order to…”. Put the base form of a verb after pour. The purpose stated here is separate from whether the effect was actually achieved.

13The construction il s’agit de
Structure

il s’agit de + noun / infinitive

In the article
Le blog de Google précise qu’il s’agit d’un haïku en anglais évoquant la Terre bleue, les flux de données et la lumière des étoiles.
Key points

It explains what something is about: “it is a matter of…”. The il is not a particular man but a formal subject of this construction. The negative il ne s’agit pas de means “this is not about…”.

Japanese grammar

Understand the structure and usage from the text.

01Citing a source: によると
Structure

noun + によると

In the article
ITmediaによると、Project Suncatcherは、Googleが2025年11月に発表した長期的な研究プロジェクトです。
Key points

As in “LCPによると”, it shows where the information comes from. What that source reported follows. It is used differently from “私にとって”, which gives one’s own opinion.

02Giving examples with など
Structure

noun / expression + など

In the article
その後の数週間で、電源の投入や、機械学習の初期テストなどを終えたといいます。
Key points

“暴言など” gives “abusive language” as one example. It is not necessarily a closed list of only the things named. It also helps when reading the scope of a news story.

03The polite past ました
Structure

verb stem (連用形) + ました

In the article
宇宙で動くAI計算の実験「Project Suncatcher」の試作衛星から、最初のAIの応答が届きました。
Key points

In “発表しました”, ました makes a verb polite past. The negative is “ませんでした”. Read the actual date together with the date and time in the text.

04Quoting with と: content and report
Structure

plain-form sentence + と + verbe de parole (報じる, 説明する…)

In the article
Googleは10月30日(現地時間)、宇宙で人工知能(AI)の計算を行う構想「Project Suncatcher」の試作衛星から、軌道上のTPU(AI向けの計算チップ)による最初のAIの応答を受信した、と発表しました。
Key points

と takes the content that is reported or explained. In “改定する方針だと報じました”, “改定する方針だ” is what the report said. Separating the content from who said it and how makes long sentences easier to read.

05Treating a clause like a noun with こと
Structure

plain-form sentence + こと + particle

In the article
今回は、地上局との交信の際に、衛星に載せたオープンモデルの「Gemma 4」に、宇宙にいることをテーマにした俳句を作るよう指示しました。
Key points

“〜すること” treats an action or content like a noun. The particle after it (が・を・は…) shows its role in the sentence. “ことができる” is a fixed combination meaning “can”.

06Possibility in Japanese: できる・られる
Structure

verb potential form / 〜ことができる

In the article
TPUが宇宙で確実にワークロードを実行できると確認できれば、2027年に予定している、相互に接続した2基の衛星による次のマイルストーンにつながるとしています。
Key points

できる is the basic verb for ability. The potential form of 受ける is 受けられる. The same られる can also be passive or honorific, so decide from the meaning of the sentence.
