What are we talking about?
These are the five properties now ranked premiers crus for reds in the 1855 classification. A château here means a wine estate, not a whole region.
The five names to remember
The numbers match the markers. The location of a property is not necessarily its visitor entrance.
| No. | Château | Appellation / location |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Lafite Rothschild | Pauillac, in the north |
| 2 | Latour | Pauillac, in the south |
| 3 | Margaux | Margaux |
| 4 | Mouton Rothschild | Pauillac, near Lafite |
| 5 | Haut-Brion | Pessac / Pessac-Léognan |
The three Pauillac properties

Remembering this group of three makes the map easier to read. See the profiles for photos and information specific to each château.
The exception: Haut-Brion

Haut-Brion is in Pessac, near Bordeaux, not in the Médoc. The five first-growth reds are therefore not five exclusively Médoc properties.
1855 and 1973
Lafite, Latour, Margaux and Haut-Brion were premiers crus in 1855. Mouton was promoted from second to first growth in 1973. The classification of properties is not a score given to each vintage.
Before a visit
Check access, booking, entry and opening hours with each property. A marker does not mean permanent public opening. No price, journey time or time slot is guaranteed here.
