What was announced
According to TF1 and AFP, the prosecutor’s office said on 27 October that the autopsy of a 59-year-old demonstrator who died in Paris on 17 October concluded acute cardiorespiratory failure on a pathological cardiac background.
What the family disputes
The family’s lawyer raises a possible link with tear gas. The relatives also dispute the existence of a known heart condition. Their statements must be distinguished from the conclusions reported by the prosecutor’s office.
Is the investigation over?
No. A judicial investigation to establish the causes of death was opened on 27 October and further analyses were requested. The publication of autopsy results does not mean that responsibility has been established.

Distinguish a finding, a statement attributed to someone and a question still being examined. A possibility mentioned is not, by itself, a demonstrated cause.

01Negation and its scope
ne / n’ … pas · ne … plus
La publication de résultats d’autopsie ne signifie pas qu’une responsabilité est établie.Key pointsNormally ne and pas wrap the verb. Before a vowel, ne becomes n’. Check which part of the sentence the negation covers. Ne … plus means “no longer”.
02Citing a source with selon
selon + noun / organisation
Selon TF1 et l’AFP, le parquet a indiqué le 27 octobre que l’autopsie d’un manifestant de 59 ans, mort à Paris le 17 octobre, concluait à une défaillance cardiorespiratoire aiguë sur un terrain cardiaque pathologique.Key pointsSelon means “according to”. Put a person or organisation after it as the source. It separates facts the writer checked directly from what another body or report said. Citing a source does not turn a forecast into an accomplished fact.
03Purpose with pour
pour + infinitive
Une information judiciaire pour rechercher les causes de la mort a été ouverte le 27 octobre et des analyses complémentaires ont été demandées.Key pointsThis is the purpose, “in order to…”. Put the base form of a verb after pour. The purpose stated here is separate from whether the effect was actually achieved.
04The present of être
est / sont + complement
Une possibilité évoquée n’est pas, à elle seule, une cause démontrée.Key pointsEst is third-person singular and sont third-person plural of être. They express “is / are” — a state or description. If a past participle follows, it is a different structure such as the passive, so check the words that follow.
05Dates and their prepositions
le + 日付 / du … au …
Le parquet a communiqué le 27 octobre des résultats d’autopsie concernant un homme mort le 17 octobre.Key pointsLe 15 octobre means “on 15 October”. Distinguish the le before a date from the le that marks a weekly habit like a weekday. Du is de + le and au is à + le, so decide the meaning from the verb and period expressions around them. Their role depends on the group: a range of dates, the date of a bulletin or another complement.
06Coordination with et
word / group / clause + et + …
La famille les conteste et les circonstances restent à éclaircir.Key pointsEt joins not only words but also groups of nouns and whole clauses. Spot the two elements playing the same role to break up a long sentence. Et does not necessarily express cause and effect.

01Citing a source: によると
noun + によると
TF1とAFPによると、パリのデモに参加していた59歳の男性が10月17日に死亡した件で、検察は27日、解剖で心臓の疾患を背景とする急性の心肺機能不全が確認されたと説明しました。Key pointsAs in “LCPによると”, it shows where the information comes from. What that source reported follows. It is used differently from “私にとって”, which gives one’s own opinion.
02Rejecting an interpretation
〜わけではない / 〜という意味ではない
解剖結果が発表されたことは、誰かの責任が確定したという意味ではありません。Key pointsThese forms limit and deny an interpretation: “it does not necessarily follow” or “that is not what is meant”. They do not necessarily deny every fact in the sentence. Read what is being denied together with the earlier part.
03Defining a term with とは
noun + とは
解剖結果が発表されたことは、誰かの責任が確定したという意味ではありません。Key pointsIt takes up a word, as in “在留資格とは?”, and asks for its meaning. In explanations it is used as “〜とは、…です”. Here the quotation と and the topic は are combined.
04Expressing a possibility
〜可能性がある / 〜かもしれない
遺族側の弁護士は、催涙ガスとの関連の可能性を指摘しています。Key pointsThese forms say something may happen. Even when “possibility” is written, it does not mean it will certainly happen. Check whose forecast it is, plus the time and conditions.
05Polite negation and plain form
〜ではありません / 〜ではない
解剖結果が発表されたことは、誰かの責任が確定したという意味ではありません。Key pointsThey negate a noun and similar content. “ではありません” is the polite form and “ではない” the plain form. “成立ではありません” shows that it cannot be said to have been concluded.
06Indicating the subject: について
noun + について
10月17日に死亡した男性について、検察が27日に解剖結果を説明しました。Key pointsAs in “予算について”, it shows the topic to be talked about or explained. In the form “〜についての報道”, の is added so that the group qualifies the following noun.
