Winter truce from 1 November: protection that does not erase rent

Before the period of 1 November 2026 to 31 March 2027 begins, here are the protections, their limits and what remains owed.

In this article
The period to remember
According to Service Public, the truce runs from 1 November to the following 31 March. In principle it suspends the carrying out of evictions of the tenants concerned. This article recalls the scheme before it starts; it does not announce a new law.
Rent is still owed
Rent and accumulated debts do not disappear during this period. A legal action begun by the landlord must also be distinguished from the actual carrying out of an eviction.
Exceptions exist
Rehousing suited to family needs can in particular rule out the protection. Exceptions also apply to dangerous buildings or the removal of a violent spouse under a protection order. Not every situation therefore benefits from the same rules.
The word and the support
Trêve means a temporary break and hivernale means relating to winter. It should be understood as a suspension limited in time, not a wiping out of debt. The ADIL (housing information agencies) can inform people about their housing situation.

01Negation and its scope
ne / n’ … pas · ne … plus
Cet article rappelle le dispositif avant son début ; il n’annonce pas une nouvelle loi.Key pointsNormally ne and pas wrap the verb. Before a vowel, ne becomes n’. Check which part of the sentence the negation covers. Ne … plus means “no longer”.
02Citing a source with selon
selon + noun / organisation
Selon Service Public, la trêve s’étend du 1er novembre au 31 mars suivant.Key pointsSelon means “according to”. Put a person or organisation after it as the source. It separates facts the writer checked directly from what another body or report said. Citing a source does not turn a forecast into an accomplished fact.
03Pouvoir: ability and possibility
peut / peuvent / pourrait + infinitive
Un relogement adapté aux besoins familiaux peut notamment exclure la protection.Key pointsPut a base-form verb after pouvoir. Peut means “can” or “may”; the conditional pourrait gives a more reserved possibility, “might”. It does not necessarily mean implementation is settled.
04The subject relative pronoun qui
noun + qui + verb
Avant le début de la période du 1er novembre 2026 au 31 mars 2027, voici les protections, leurs limites et ce qui reste dû.Key pointsQui continues a description of the person or thing just mentioned (“the one that does…”). Because qui is itself the subject of the next verb, do not repeat the subject. The verb agrees with the noun qui refers to.
05The uses of dans
dans + noun phrase
Il faut comprendre une suspension limitée dans le temps, pas un effacement de dette.Key pointsDans means “in, inside” for places, but also for a scope such as a system or period. With future time, dans deux jours means “in two days”. In the article’s example, check what it is “inside” and which scope it marks. Identify the value of dans in the passage.
06Coordination with et
word / group / clause + et + …
Les loyers et les dettes accumulées ne disparaissent pas pendant cette période.Key pointsEt joins not only words but also groups of nouns and whole clauses. Spot the two elements playing the same role to break up a long sentence. Et does not necessarily express cause and effect.

01Citing a source: によると
noun + によると
Service Publicの案内によると、冬季の立ち退き猶予期間は11月1日から翌年3月31日までです。Key pointsAs in “LCPによると”, it shows where the information comes from. What that source reported follows. It is used differently from “私にとって”, which gives one’s own opinion.
02Rejecting an interpretation
〜わけではない / 〜という意味ではない
期間中も、家賃の支払義務やすでにある借金が消えるわけではありません。Key pointsThese forms limit and deny an interpretation: “it does not necessarily follow” or “that is not what is meant”. They do not necessarily deny every fact in the sentence. Read what is being denied together with the earlier part.
03Polite negation and plain form
〜ではありません / 〜ではない
すべての住居や人が同じ条件で守られる制度ではありません。Key pointsThey negate a noun and similar content. “ではありません” is the polite form and “ではない” the plain form. “成立ではありません” shows that it cannot be said to have been concluded.
04Indicating the subject: について
noun + について
今回は新しい法律の発表ではなく、毎年の制度について開始前に確認する記事です。Key pointsAs in “予算について”, it shows the topic to be talked about or explained. In the form “〜についての報道”, の is added so that the group qualifies the following noun.
05Giving examples with など
noun / expression + など
家族の必要に合う別の住居が用意される場合など、保護の対象外となる例があります。Key points“暴言など” gives “abusive language” as one example. It is not necessarily a closed list of only the things named. It also helps when reading the scope of a news story.
06Treating a clause like a noun with こと
plain-form sentence + こと + particle
対象となる借主を住居から退去させることが、原則として止められます。Key points“〜すること” treats an action or content like a noun. The particle after it (が・を・は…) shows its role in the sentence. “ことができる” is a fixed combination meaning “can”.
