What has changed since yesterday
According to AFP, the Paris commercial court examined BHV’s finances on 30 October. Lawyers say a decision will come on Monday 2 November at 3 pm. On the morning of the 31st, this result is still to come.
A clarification about the court
A move in Lyon had been announced earlier in the week. AFP now says management turned to Paris. An initial announcement and the procedure actually started are not always the same.
Receivership and liquidation
Judicial receivership (redressement judiciaire) aims to let a struggling company keep operating and keep its jobs. It is distinct from liquidation. The court decides on the appropriate procedure.
What to follow
Examining a case, announcing an upcoming decision and delivering a decision are three separate stages. You cannot conclude that a closure has already been decided. The next thing to check will be the content of the judgment announced for 2 November.

01Negation and its scope
ne / n’ … pas · ne … plus
La tenue de l’audience ne signifie pas que le redressement est déjà ouvert.Key pointsNormally ne and pas wrap the verb. Before a vowel, ne becomes n’. Check which part of the sentence the negation covers. Ne … plus means “no longer”.
02Citing a source with selon
selon + noun / organisation
Selon l’AFP, le tribunal des activités économiques de Paris a examiné les finances du BHV le 30 octobre.Key pointsSelon means “according to”. Put a person or organisation after it as the source. It separates facts the writer checked directly from what another body or report said. Citing a source does not turn a forecast into an accomplished fact.
03Pouvoir: ability and possibility
peut / peuvent / pourrait + infinitive
On ne peut pas en déduire une fermeture déjà décidée.Key pointsPut a base-form verb after pouvoir. Peut means “can” or “may”; the conditional pourrait gives a more reserved possibility, “might”. It does not necessarily mean implementation is settled.
04The present of être
est / sont + complement
L’AFP précise finalement que la direction s’est tournée vers Paris.Key pointsEst is third-person singular and sont third-person plural of être. They express “is / are” — a state or description. If a past participle follows, it is a different structure such as the passive, so check the words that follow.
05Dates and their prepositions
le + 日付 / du … au …
L’AFP rapporte le 30 octobre une décision attendue lundi.Key pointsLe 15 octobre means “on 15 October”. Distinguish the le before a date from the le that marks a weekly habit like a weekday. Du is de + le and au is à + le, so decide the meaning from the verb and period expressions around them. Their role depends on the group: a range of dates, the date of a bulletin or another complement.
06Coordination with et
word / group / clause + et + …
Une annonce initiale et la procédure effectivement engagée ne sont pas toujours identiques.Key pointsEt joins not only words but also groups of nouns and whole clauses. Spot the two elements playing the same role to break up a long sentence. Et does not necessarily express cause and effect.

01Citing a source: によると
noun + によると
AFPによると、パリの経済活動裁判所は30日にBHVの財務状況を審理しました。Key pointsAs in “LCPによると”, it shows where the information comes from. What that source reported follows. It is used differently from “私にとって”, which gives one’s own opinion.
02The polite past ました
verb stem (連用形) + ました
経営側と従業員側の弁護士は、判断が11月2日月曜日の15時に示される予定だと説明しました。Key pointsIn “発表しました”, ました makes a verb polite past. The negative is “ませんでした”. Read the actual date together with the date and time in the text.
03Quoting with と: content and report
plain-form sentence + と + verbe de parole (報じる, 説明する…)
週の初めにはリヨンでの申請が伝えられましたが、AFPの続報は、経営側が最終的にパリの裁判所へ向かったと説明しています。Key pointsと takes the content that is reported or explained. In “改定する方針だと報じました”, “改定する方針だ” is what the report said. Separating the content from who said it and how makes long sentences easier to read.
04Treating a clause like a noun with こと
plain-form sentence + こと + particle
決定前に「閉店が決まった」と言い換えることはできません。Key points“〜すること” treats an action or content like a noun. The particle after it (が・を・は…) shows its role in the sentence. “ことができる” is a fixed combination meaning “can”.
05Possibility in Japanese: できる・られる
verb potential form / 〜ことができる
決定前に「閉店が決まった」と言い換えることはできません。Key pointsできる is the basic verb for ability. The potential form of 受ける is 受けられる. The same られる can also be passive or honorific, so decide from the meaning of the sentence.
06Linking actions with the て-form
verb て-form + next expression
最初の発表と、その後に確認された手続きは、区別して読む必要があります。Key pointsThe て-form links actions in a series, in order or as a reason. In “確認して、出発する” the relation is judged from the content. In “〜ている” it can show an action in progress or a continuing state.
