The figure to remember
According to Insee, GDP in volume fell by 0.1% in the third quarter of 2026, after being stable in the previous quarter. This is a first estimate, which may be revised.
Different components
Household consumption rose by 0.4%, but investment fell by 0.6% and exports decreased. The overall result combines several components: households, businesses, government and trade with other countries.
What does GDP measure?
Gross domestic product adds up, among other things, the value added produced in a territory during a period. It does not directly measure each person’s income or well-being. GDP stands for gross domestic product.
Reading the period correctly
30 October is the publication date; the period studied runs from July to September. This figure does not describe activity on 31 October. A quarterly comparison and an annual comparison use different bases.

01Negation and its scope
ne / n’ … pas · ne … plus
Une hausse de la consommation ne suffit pas à faire progresser l’ensemble de l’économie.Key pointsNormally ne and pas wrap the verb. Before a vowel, ne becomes n’. Check which part of the sentence the negation covers. Ne … plus means “no longer”.
02Citing a source with selon
selon + noun / organisation
Selon l’Insee, le PIB en volume diminue de 0,1 % au troisième trimestre 2026, après une stabilité au trimestre précédent.Key pointsSelon means “according to”. Put a person or organisation after it as the source. It separates facts the writer checked directly from what another body or report said. Citing a source does not turn a forecast into an accomplished fact.
03Pouvoir: ability and possibility
peut / peuvent / pourrait + infinitive
Il s’agit d’une première estimation, qui peut être révisée.Key pointsPut a base-form verb after pouvoir. Peut means “can” or “may”; the conditional pourrait gives a more reserved possibility, “might”. It does not necessarily mean implementation is settled.
04The construction il s’agit de
il s’agit de + noun / infinitive
Il s’agit d’une première estimation, qui peut être révisée.Key pointsIt explains what something is about: “it is a matter of…”. The il is not a particular man but a formal subject of this construction. The negative il ne s’agit pas de means “this is not about…”.
05The present of être
est / sont + complement
PIB est le sigle de produit intérieur brut.Key pointsEst is third-person singular and sont third-person plural of être. They express “is / are” — a state or description. If a past participle follows, it is a different structure such as the passive, so check the words that follow.
06The subject relative pronoun qui
noun + qui + verb
Il s’agit d’une première estimation, qui peut être révisée.Key pointsQui continues a description of the person or thing just mentioned (“the one that does…”). Because qui is itself the subject of the next verb, do not repeat the subject. The verb agrees with the noun qui refers to.

01Citing a source: によると
noun + によると
INSEEによると、2026年7〜9月の国内総生産は、物価変動の影響を取り除いた値で前の四半期より0.1%減りました。Key pointsAs in “LCPによると”, it shows where the information comes from. What that source reported follows. It is used differently from “私にとって”, which gives one’s own opinion.
02Expressing a possibility
〜可能性がある / 〜かもしれない
これは最初の推計で、今後改定される可能性があります。Key pointsThese forms say something may happen. Even when “possibility” is written, it does not mean it will certainly happen. Check whose forecast it is, plus the time and conditions.
03Polite negation and plain form
〜ではありません / 〜ではない
国民一人ひとりの収入や幸福を直接測る数字ではありません。Key pointsThey negate a noun and similar content. “ではありません” is the polite form and “ではない” the plain form. “成立ではありません” shows that it cannot be said to have been concluded.
04Giving examples with など
noun / expression + など
国内総生産は、一定期間に国内で生み出された付加価値などを集計した指標です。Key points“暴言など” gives “abusive language” as one example. It is not necessarily a closed list of only the things named. It also helps when reading the scope of a news story.
05The polite past ました
verb stem (連用形) + ました
家計の消費は0.4%増えた一方、投資は0.6%減りました。Key pointsIn “発表しました”, ました makes a verb polite past. The negative is “ませんでした”. Read the actual date together with the date and time in the text.
06Possibility in Japanese: できる・られる
verb potential form / 〜ことができる
家計、企業、政府、海外との取引を合わせた数字なので、一つの項目だけでは全体の結果を説明できません。Key pointsできる is the basic verb for ability. The potential form of 受ける is 受けられる. The same られる can also be passive or honorific, so decide from the meaning of the sentence.
