Today’s appointment
According to the IOC, the opening ceremony of Dakar 2026 is scheduled for 31 October. The Games continue until 13 November. This article presents the programme before the ceremony; it does not recount a course of events that has already ended.
The host country
Senegal, in West Africa, hosts these Games. The IOC presents them as the first Olympic event organised on the African continent. Dakar is the capital of Senegal and gives its name to the edition.
Understanding the Youth Games
The YOG are for young athletes. Dakar is the fourth edition of the summer YOG. This competition is separate from the usual Summer Olympic Games: the conditions of participation and the calendar are found in its own documents.
The words of the event
Senegal is the host country; youth here refers to young people; opening ceremony is the official event that opens the Games. Distinguish between the programme, the results and testimonies to understand the nature of the information published.

01Citing a source with selon
selon + noun / organisation
Selon le CIO, la cérémonie d’ouverture de Dakar 2026 est prévue le 31 octobre.Key pointsSelon means “according to”. Put a person or organisation after it as the source. It separates facts the writer checked directly from what another body or report said. Citing a source does not turn a forecast into an accomplished fact.
02Expressing a plan or a deadline
être prévu / prévoir / être envisagé
Selon le CIO, la cérémonie d’ouverture de Dakar 2026 est prévue le 31 octobre.Key pointsPrévoir means “to plan, to expect”. Être prévu means “to be scheduled” and être envisagé means “to be under consideration”. In the news, read them separately from expressions that describe events that have already happened. They do not say that the event has already taken place.
03Purpose with pour
pour + infinitive
Voici les repères pour comprendre cette édition.Key pointsThis is the purpose, “in order to…”. Put the base form of a verb after pour. The purpose stated here is separate from whether the effect was actually achieved.
04The present of être
est / sont + complement
Dakar est la capitale du Sénégal et donne son nom à l’édition.Key pointsEst is third-person singular and sont third-person plural of être. They express “is / are” — a state or description. If a past participle follows, it is a different structure such as the passive, so check the words that follow.
05The subject relative pronoun qui
noun + qui + verb
Sénégal désigne le pays hôte ; jeunesse renvoie ici aux jeunes ; cérémonie d’ouverture désigne l’événement officiel qui ouvre les Jeux.Key pointsQui continues a description of the person or thing just mentioned (“the one that does…”). Because qui is itself the subject of the next verb, do not repeat the subject. The verb agrees with the noun qui refers to.
06Dates and their prepositions
le + 日付 / du … au …
Les Jeux Olympiques de la Jeunesse se déroulent au Sénégal du 31 octobre au 13 novembre.Key pointsLe 15 octobre means “on 15 October”. Distinguish the le before a date from the le that marks a weekly habit like a weekday. Du is de + le and au is à + le, so decide the meaning from the verb and period expressions around them. Their role depends on the group: a range of dates, the date of a bulletin or another complement.

01Citing a source: によると
noun + によると
国際オリンピック委員会によると、ダカール2026の開会式は10月31日に予定されています。Key pointsAs in “LCPによると”, it shows where the information comes from. What that source reported follows. It is used differently from “私にとって”, which gives one’s own opinion.
02Plan, outlook and policy
〜の予定 / 〜見込み / 〜方針
ニュースでは開催の予定、競技の結果、選手の感想を区別すると、何が確認された情報かが分かりやすくなります。Key points予定 is a plan, 見込み a forecast and 方針 a course of action or intention. None of them asserts that something has already been carried out. Note the difference from expressions such as “決まりました”.
03Polite negation and plain form
〜ではありません / 〜ではない
この記事は開会前の案内で、式が終わったという報告ではありません。Key pointsThey negate a noun and similar content. “ではありません” is the polite form and “ではない” the plain form. “成立ではありません” shows that it cannot be said to have been concluded.
04Linking actions with the て-form
verb て-form + next expression
IOCは、アフリカ大陸で初めて開催される五輪イベントと位置付けています。Key pointsThe て-form links actions in a series, in order or as a reason. In “確認して、出発する” the relation is judged from the content. In “〜ている” it can show an action in progress or a continuing state.
05Linking two nouns with の
noun A + の + noun B
若い選手の大会と、通常の夏季五輪の違いを紹介します。Key pointsA explains noun B that follows. It is not only possession: the relation can be belonging, target, content and more. In “政府の案” and “年金の税控除”, read the relation from the context.
06The topic marked by は
noun / noun phrase + は
大会は11月13日までです。Key pointsは shows what the sentence is about; an explanation of that topic follows. は and が are not always interchangeable: contrast and the way information is placed change.
