LANGUAGE NOTES

Explained in English

French grammar

Learn sentence patterns and usage from the article’s own sentences.

01The present indicative
Structure

est / sont + attribute (noun, adjective, prepositional phrase)

In the article
Les dates d’annonce, des faits et de vérification sont distinctes.
Key points

Être in the present is est for a singular subject and sont for a plural one. It describes nature, state or place (“is”, “is located”). If what follows (the attribute) is a noun, adjective or prepositional phrase, it is not a passive. If a past participle follows, it is a passive (est annoncé). Headlines and summaries often use the present to describe the current situation.

02The passé composé
Structure

present of avoir + past participle

In the article
Dans la préfecture de Fukushima, le sortant Masao Uchibori, sans étiquette, a obtenu 585 641 voix et décroche un quatrième mandat, largement devant six nouveaux candidats.
Key points

The passé composé is the most common past tense, used for “did” and “has done” — actions completed in the past. It is formed with the auxiliary avoir (a / ont…) in the present + a past participle. Past participles of -er verbs end in -é (annoncer → annoncé); learn the irregular ones (faire → fait, prendre → pris, voir → vu). In the negative, ne … pas wraps the auxiliary (n’a pas annoncé). In the news it reports facts that have already happened, such as “announced” or “voted”.

03Negation and its scope
Structure

ne / n’ … pas · ne … plus

In the article
Les voix et la participation de ces deux scrutins ne figurent pas dans les articles consultés.
Key points

Normally ne and pas wrap the verb. Before a vowel, ne becomes n’. Check which part of the sentence the negation covers. Ne … plus means “no longer”.

04Citing a source with selon
Structure

selon + noun / organisation

In the article
Selon NHK, les sortants ont été réélus dans trois scrutins locaux le dimanche 25 octobre : Masao Uchibori à Fukushima (quatrième mandat, gouverneur), Hachiichi Nakahara à Niigata (troisième mandat, maire) et Satoru Chinen à Naha (deuxième mandat, maire).
Key points

Selon means “according to”. Put a person or organisation after it as the source. It separates facts the writer checked directly from what another body or report said. Citing a source does not turn a forecast into an accomplished fact.

05Dates and their prepositions
Structure

le + 日付 / du … au …

In the article
NHK rapporte les résultats du 25 octobre : Masao Uchibori élu pour un quatrième mandat au poste de gouverneur de Fukushima, Hachiichi Nakahara pour un troisième mandat à Niigata et Satoru Chinen pour un deuxième à Naha.
Key points

Le 15 octobre means “on 15 October”. Distinguish the le before a date from the le that marks a weekly habit like a weekday. Du is de + le and au is à + le, so decide the meaning from the verb and period expressions around them. Their role depends on the group: a range of dates, the date of a bulletin or another complement.

06The uses of dans
Structure

dans + noun phrase

In the article
Dans la préfecture de Fukushima, le sortant Masao Uchibori, sans étiquette, a obtenu 585 641 voix et décroche un quatrième mandat, largement devant six nouveaux candidats.
Key points

Dans means “in, inside” for places, but also for a scope such as a system or period. With future time, dans deux jours means “in two days”. In the article’s example, check what it is “inside” and which scope it marks. Identify the value of dans in the passage.

07Coordination with et
Structure

word / group / clause + et + …

In the article
La participation, la comparaison avec le précédent scrutin et les réactions des partis n’ont pas pu être vérifiées à la rédaction de cet article.
Key points

Et joins not only words but also groups of nouns and whole clauses. Spot the two elements playing the same role to break up a long sentence. Et does not necessarily express cause and effect.

08Definite articles
Structure

le / la / l’ / les + noun

In the article
L’article de NHK ne donne ni la participation ni les voix des autres candidats.
Key points

Le is masculine singular, la feminine singular and les plural. Before a vowel or a silent h, singular le and la become l’. The definite article points to something already known or a general concept, so look at the context.

Explained in English

Japanese grammar

Understand the structure and usage from the text.

01Citing a source: によると
Structure

noun + によると

In the article
NHKによると、25日(日)の選挙で、現職が、3つの首長選挙で当選しました。
Key points

As in “LCPによると”, it shows where the information comes from. What that source reported follows. It is used differently from “私にとって”, which gives one’s own opinion.

02The polite past ました
Structure

verb stem (連用形) + ました

In the article
NHKは、25日に投票があった首長選挙で、福島県知事に内堀雅雄さんが4回目の当選、新潟市長に中原八一さんが3回目、那覇市長に知念覚さんが2回目の当選と伝えました。
Key points

In “発表しました”, ました makes a verb polite past. The negative is “ませんでした”. Read the actual date together with the date and time in the text.

03Quoting with と: content and report
Structure

plain-form sentence + と + verbe de parole (報じる, 説明する…)

In the article
NHKは、25日に投票があった首長選挙で、福島県知事に内堀雅雄さんが4回目の当選、新潟市長に中原八一さんが3回目、那覇市長に知念覚さんが2回目の当選と伝えました。
Key points

と takes the content that is reported or explained. In “改定する方針だと報じました”, “改定する方針だ” is what the report said. Separating the content from who said it and how makes long sentences easier to read.

04Linking two nouns with の
Structure

noun A + の + noun B

In the article
福島県知事選挙では、無所属の現職、内堀雅雄さんが、58万5641票を得て、4回目の当選をしました。
Key points

A explains noun B that follows. It is not only possession: the relation can be belonging, target, content and more. In “政府の案” and “年金の税控除”, read the relation from the context.

05The topic marked by は
Structure

noun / noun phrase + は

In the article
福島県知事は内堀雅雄さん(4回目)、新潟市長は中原八一さん(3回目)、那覇市長は知念覚さん(2回目)です。
Key points

は shows what the sentence is about; an explanation of that topic follows. は and が are not always interchangeable: contrast and the way information is placed change.

06Setting the time of validity
Structure

time / date / stage + 時点で / 時点では

In the article
投票率、前回の選挙との比べ方、政党の反応は、この記事を書いた時点で、確認できていません。
Key points

時点 is a word for giving information as of a moment or stage. “6月末時点の人数” is not necessarily the same as today’s number. で shows the reference time, and では can add contrast or limitation.
