The Order of Culture ceremony

According to an article on Nippon.com, the ceremony presenting the Order of Culture for fiscal 2026 took place on 3 November at the Imperial Palace in Tokyo. The eight recipients had been announced the previous month; Emperor Naruhito presented the insignia, praising their long-standing contribution to culture. Seven of the eight recipients attended. The headline of a Nikkei article quotes lighting designer Motoko Ishii and other recipients saying they want to “redouble their efforts”.

The recipients present

The article names seven recipients: Kenso Soai (76, distinguished professor at the Tokyo University of Science), Motoko Ishii (88, lighting designer), Toyoo Ito (85, architect), Tsuneyoshi Kuroiwa (84, biological sciences), Tetsuya Shiokawa (81, French literature), Shunichi Tokura (78, composer and former Commissioner of the Agency for Cultural Affairs) and Shigekazu Nagata (77, immunology). The name of the eighth recipient and the reason for the absence are not in the article: they could not be verified.

The autumn honours

The autumn honours announced the same day cover 3,861 people, including 400 women (10.4%) and 99 foreign nationals from 53 countries and regions. The Grand Cordon of the Order of the Rising Sun has seven names, including Akio Toyoda (70), chairman of Toyota. The actress Keiko Matsuzaka (74) will receive the Order of the Rising Sun, Gold Rays with Rosette. Among the foreign recipients, David Allvin, a former US Air Force chief of staff, and Pham Minh Chinh, a former Vietnamese prime minister, receive the Grand Cordon of the Order of the Rising Sun.

Reading with caution

The honours recognise services rendered to the nation; the Order of Culture rewards a contribution to culture. The figures and ages cited come from the articles consulted. For Japanese names, only those whose characters could be confirmed are given in kanji in the Japanese version.

LANGUAGE NOTES

Explained in English

French grammar

Learn sentence patterns and usage from the article’s own sentences.

01Negation and its scope
Structure

ne / n’ … pas · ne … plus

In the article
Le nom du huitième lauréat et la raison de son absence ne figurent pas dans l’article : ils n’ont pas pu être vérifiés.
Key points

Normally ne and pas wrap the verb. Before a vowel, ne becomes n’. Check which part of the sentence the negation covers. Ne … plus means “no longer”.

02Citing a source with selon
Structure

selon + noun / organisation

In the article
Selon un article de Nippon.com, la cérémonie de remise de l’Ordre de la Culture de l’exercice 2026 s’est tenue le 3 novembre au Palais impérial, à Tokyo.
Key points

Selon means “according to”. Put a person or organisation after it as the source. It separates facts the writer checked directly from what another body or report said. Citing a source does not turn a forecast into an accomplished fact.

03The present of être
Structure

est / sont + complement

In the article
Pour les noms japonais, seuls ceux dont l’écriture en caractères a pu être confirmée sont donnés en kanji dans la version japonaise.
Key points

Est is third-person singular and sont third-person plural of être. They express “is / are” — a state or description. If a past participle follows, it is a different structure such as the passive, so check the words that follow.

04The subject relative pronoun qui
Structure

noun + qui + verb

In the article
Le titre d’un article du Nikkei cite la créatrice lumière Motoko Ishii et d’autres lauréats qui disent vouloir « redoubler d’efforts ».
Key points

Qui continues a description of the person or thing just mentioned (“the one that does…”). Because qui is itself the subject of the next verb, do not repeat the subject. The verb agrees with the noun qui refers to.

05Dates and their prepositions
Structure

le + 日付 / du … au …

In the article
Le 3 novembre, jour de la Fête de la Culture, l’Ordre de la Culture a été remis au Palais impérial.
Key points

Le 15 octobre means “on 15 October”. Distinguish the le before a date from the le that marks a weekly habit like a weekday. Du is de + le and au is à + le, so decide the meaning from the verb and period expressions around them. Their role depends on the group: a range of dates, the date of a bulletin or another complement.

06The uses of dans
Structure

dans + noun phrase

In the article
Le nom du huitième lauréat et la raison de son absence ne figurent pas dans l’article : ils n’ont pas pu être vérifiés.
Key points

Dans means “in, inside” for places, but also for a scope such as a system or period. With future time, dans deux jours means “in two days”. In the article’s example, check what it is “inside” and which scope it marks. Identify the value of dans in the passage.

Explained in English

Japanese grammar

Understand the structure and usage from the text.

01Citing a source: によると
Structure

noun + によると

In the article
ニッポンドットコムが伝えた記事によると、2026年度の文化勲章の親授式が、11月3日に皇居で行われました。
Key points

As in “LCPによると”, it shows where the information comes from. What that source reported follows. It is used differently from “私にとって”, which gives one’s own opinion.

02The polite past ました
Structure

verb stem (連用形) + ました

In the article
11月3日の文化の日、皇居で文化勲章の親授式が行われました。
Key points

In “発表しました”, ました makes a verb polite past. The negative is “ませんでした”. Read the actual date together with the date and time in the text.

03Possibility in Japanese: できる・られる
Structure

verb potential form / 〜ことができる

In the article
8人目の受章者の名前と、欠席の理由は、参照した記事には書かれておらず、ここでは確認できませんでした。
Key points

できる is the basic verb for ability. The potential form of 受ける is 受けられる. The same られる can also be passive or honorific, so decide from the meaning of the sentence.

04Linking actions with the て-form
Structure

verb て-form + next expression

In the article
受章者8人は先月に発表されていて、天皇陛下が勲章を手渡し、長年の文化の発展への貢献をたたえました。
Key points

The て-form links actions in a series, in order or as a reason. In “確認して、出発する” the relation is judged from the content. In “〜ている” it can show an action in progress or a continuing state.

05Linking two nouns with の
Structure

noun A + の + noun B

In the article
同じ日に発表された秋の叙勲の人数や顔ぶれも、確認できた範囲で整理します。
Key points

A explains noun B that follows. It is not only possession: the relation can be belonging, target, content and more. In “政府の案” and “年金の税控除”, read the relation from the context.

06The topic marked by は
Structure

noun / noun phrase + は

In the article
同じ11月3日に発表された秋の叙勲は、全体で3,861人でした。
Key points

は shows what the sentence is about; an explanation of that topic follows. は and が are not always interchangeable: contrast and the way information is placed change.
